The live-action version of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” originally an animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, debuted on February 22, 2024. This captivating production features Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Ken Leung as Commander Zhao, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. The first season garnered mixed opinions from critics, yet its impressive viewership led Netflix to commission two more seasons. In the upcoming second season, new characters will be introduced, one of whom has recently shared additional details about their character.

In Season 1 of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” Toph Beifong was conspicuously absent, but Miya Cech was chosen to play the gifted blind earthbender. Cech, a Japanese-American actress who began her career as a model, made her acting debut in 2015. She has since appeared on television in shows like “Are You Afraid of the Dark?,” “The Astronauts,” “Surfside Girls,” “The Santa Clauses,” and “Beef.” In films, she’s been seen in “The Darkest Minds,” “Rim of the World,” “Always Be My Maybe,” “Marvelous and the Black Hole,” and “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.” Cech has confirmed that her character, affectionately known as “Melon Lord,” will appear in Season 2. On the red carpet for her sci-fi horror film “Marshmellow,” Cech spoke about her portrayal of Toph to The Direct. The actress shared that her interpretation would be “a bit older” and “slightly more feminine.” Cech elaborated by saying:

In my interpretation, Toph will be portrayed as being somewhat older and with a touch of femininity. I aim to create a more relatable, human-like depiction of her since originally, she was an animated character.

In her quest to portray Toph faithfully, Cech reached out to Michaela Jill Murphy, the voice behind Toph in the animated series. They both shared a similar perspective on the character. Cech announced her casting in Netflix’s action-adventure comedy-drama fantasy, which was set for release in 2024, via Instagram. For years, she had harbored a dream to audition for Toph. When she finally landed the role, it felt surreal and required a pinch of disbelief. In an interview with Tudum, Cech revealed that she was a dedicated fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Toph had always been her favorite character. She saw Toph as a distinctive character and prepared for the role by undergoing boot camp training. Her martial arts background made the process enjoyable. Additionally, Cech collaborated with a consultant from the blind community to ensure accurate representation of visually impaired characters in the series.

Cech, known for her impressive acting skills, is an ideal fit for the role of Toph due to her ability to blend humor, strength, and vulnerability – traits that define Toph. Notably, Toph is also fearless, quick-witted, and independent, qualities which Cech has demonstrated in past performances. The executive producers recognized Cech’s potential for this part among numerous other auditions.

However, some fans have raised concerns about Cech’s portrayal of Toph as more feminine, a characteristic that isn’t present in the animated series and contributes to her distinctiveness. Toph is rebellious, tomboyish, and dislikes traditional etiquette; this is evident when she is forced to act like a refined lady in one episode. It’s worth mentioning that Cech has stated they will make Toph slightly more feminine, but it doesn’t seem they intend to alter the character significantly. So, we can only wait and see how this adaptation unfolds.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is expected to premiere on Netflix in early 2026.
