Fans of movies, books, and pop culture in general have probably encountered the name Stephen King during their media journey, highlighting the significant influence the American author has had on the horror genre for the past five decades. Curiosity about what frightening tales keep this productive writer up at night is something that every fan would be eager to discover, and at one point, Stephen King shared that a 1980s slasher movie he particularly enjoys is now available for streaming without cost.
Stephen King is often considered a “master of horror” due to his vast body of work that spans over 60 novels and 200 short stories, many of which have been turned into movies, such as “The Green Mile,” “The Mist,” and “The Shawshank Redemption.” King’s literary achievements place him among the authors with the most book-to-movie adaptations, surpassed only by Agatha Christie and William Shakespeare. One of King’s upcoming live-action projects is a prequel series exploring the origins of his infamous character, Pennywise the Dancing Clown, as evidenced by the recent unveiling of the first poster for “IT: Welcome to Derry,” which is set to premiere on HBO in 2025.
Stephen King Names 1987’s The Stepfather as a Horror Favorite

According to ComicBook’s report, Stephen King wrote an article for the British Film Institute in 2017, where he shared his top eight suspense films. Included on this list was Joseph Ruben’s 1987 psychological slasher “The Stepfather,” starring Jill Schoelen, Shelley Hack, and Terry O’Quinn. King highlighted a memorable scene from the film where O’Quinn’s character, the serial killer with multiple identities, brutally murdered his wife with a telephone, using the chilling line, “Saaay, who am I this time?” In the same article, King also praised the supernatural horror film “The Changeling” as one of his favorites from the 80s, demonstrating that even the self-proclaimed “King of Horror” can still be genuinely frightened by other masterpieces in the genre.
King also brought up Robert Harmon’s 1986 film “The Hitcher” and Wolf Rilla’s ’60s feature “Village of the Damned” as favorites within the horror genre. This director, known for Netflix’s “The Haunting of Hill House” series and the sequel to “The Shining,” Doctor Sleep, shares a similar love for this genre with King. Currently, Mike Flanagan is working on an adaptation of King’s 1974 debut novel for Amazon. Previously, it was speculated that Milly Shapiro would star in the eight-episode “Carrie” series, but Summer H. Howell has since been cast in the lead role. Despite not having a confirmed release date, the project appears to be in capable hands with Flanagan being a dedicated fan of King’s work.

Flanagan is still linked to direct a highly anticipated film version of Stephen King’s well-loved The Dark Tower series, however, the author previously clarified via social media that he won’t be involved in the scriptwriting process. The progress of the project has been slow, but fans of The Dark Tower speculate that an actor from the show The Last of Us could play Roland Deschain, a gunslinger from Gilead and the main character in the original work. With King’s adaptations reaching new heights, it’s exciting to learn about which movies the prolific writer is particularly fond of, and horror enthusiasts can watch King’s preferred choices on various streaming platforms for free.
If you’re a fan of horror movies or a devoted reader of Stephen King, you can stream the movie ‘The Stepfather’ for free on platforms like Tubi, The Roku Channel, FandangoNow, Crackle, Philo, Plex, and Amazon Prime Video.
