A Bloodborne Movie is Officially in the Works

A movie based on the video game Bloodborne is officially happening at Sony Pictures. While a movie adaptation is unexpected for the series, the biggest surprise is actually the announcement itself, as there hadn’t been any hints or rumors leading up to it.

Recently, the game Bloodborne has been in the news due to speculation about a remake and the yearly “Return to Yharnam” event, fueled by fans hoping for an updated version on PS5. Players have wanted a proper remaster or remake for a long time, and many thought FromSoftware, the game’s developer, might be too busy to work on it themselves, so they hoped Bluepoint Games would take on the project. However, when Bluepoint Games was closed down in March, many fans feared that a Bloodborne remake would never happen.

Bloodborne Animated Movie Announced, JackSepticEye Attached

The upcoming Bloodborne movie is taking shape in unexpected ways. At CinemaCon, Sanford Panitch, head of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, revealed plans for an R-rated animated film based on the game. He promised the movie will stay faithful to the dark, violent, and unsettling atmosphere of Bloodborne, including its Lovecraftian elements and the city of Yharnam. While details are still scarce, Variety has reported that some key creatives are already involved.

This movie is a collaboration between PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and, notably, popular online creator JackSepticEye (Sean McLoughlin). Known for his love of the game Bloodborne, JackSepticEye has expanded his skills beyond streaming, taking on acting roles – including playing himself in various projects, a character named Punch Up in Dispatch, and appearing in other films and TV shows. He most recently starred as Jack in the movie adaptation of Markiplier’s Iron Lung.

It’s no surprise this news comes shortly after the Super Mario Galaxy movie, even if the link is weak and likely just a coincidence. Video game movies are proving to be successful, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie doing incredibly well and sparking plans for a sequel, and Minecraft also gaining a lot of attention. Sony and PlayStation Productions are also developing a Helldivers movie, and we can expect more, like The Legend of Zelda, in the future.

More Games

Recent video game movies have done well, but it’s still uncertain how the Bloodborne adaptation will be received. This isn’t a remake, an updated version for newer consoles, or a brand new game. It’s not even clear if the game’s original developer, FromSoftware, is involved, though their good relationship with PlayStation suggests they probably are. The movie could potentially lead to more Bloodborne content in the future. Overall, Sony Pictures is becoming more confident in turning games into films, even challenging ones like Bloodborne. Whether it pleases existing fans or introduces the game’s unique world to a new audience, it shows PlayStation Productions is planning to create content across multiple platforms.
