I first encountered the concept of Haki way back in chapter 234 of One Piece, but it wasn’t really explained until chapter 597, when Silvers Rayleigh went into detail. Essentially, Haki is a power that comes from a person’s spiritual energy, and it gives them heightened senses, the ability to attack and defend, and even a powerful aura of intimidation. For over ten years now, it’s been considered the most dependable power in the One Piece world. However, with the recent introduction of King Nerona Imu and his soldier, Omen, in the Elbaph arc, Eiichiro Oda seems to have finally presented a genuine counter to Haki – something Imu clearly believes makes Omen a powerful weapon.
Nerona Imu’s Omen Is The Opposite Of Haki In One Piece
I was completely blown away when we first saw Omen in Chapter 1180 of One Piece! It’s this incredible power that manifests as these unique black flames, and Imu uses it for so many different things. What’s really interesting is how it feels similar to Haki – it seems to come from the same energy source within everyone in the One Piece world. But it’s definitely not just Haki, there are some major differences that make Omen something totally new and special!
Nerona Imu, in One Piece chapter 1181, declared, “Maki is my strength—a hidden power present in everything!”
Similar to Haki, Imu’s Omen – also called Maki – is a versatile power used for both attack and defense. We first saw it in Chapter 1180 when Imu used a strong, fiery blast to knock out Roronoa Zoro. They then targeted Hajrudin and Sanji with the same ability. During the fight against Loki, Imu demonstrated Omen’s flexibility by forming it into different weapons like a morning star and a sword, and even using it as a shield. In Chapter 1181, Imu showed another aspect of Omen’s power by using it to greatly increase their own size, proving just how adaptable this ability is.
How Omen Parallels Haki in One Piece
To see how Omen and Haki are alike, it helps to look at the original Japanese name for Omen, which is Maki. The name Maki and Haki sound very similar because they share the same ‘Ki’ component, meaning ‘energy.’ While Haki represents spiritual energy, Maki signifies demonic energy. This places them as opposing forces within the energy system of the One Piece universe.
In chapter 1181 of the manga, the author, Eiichiro Oda, revealed that everyone possesses the same power as Maki. This ability is very similar to Haki, but works in reverse. Imu clarifies that Omen is his source of power, fueled by envy and used to achieve his objectives. Essentially, individuals corrupted by Imu – through Covenants or other methods – can tap into Omen’s power in various ways. However, Imu, as a powerful figure with a Devil Fruit ability, ultimately controls Maki.

All Known Omen Users In One Piece So Far
The ability known as Omen or Maki is incredibly powerful, and is mainly wielded by Nerona Imu, as demonstrated in One Piece chapters 1180 and 1181. However, Imu isn’t the only one who can use Omen. They can share this power with others – for example, Imu gave an Omen to Sommers and Killingham in chapter 1180. This dramatically increased their strength, with Sommers even gaining the ability to fly within the same chapter.
Domination is the only true bliss in this world. — Nerona Imu, One Piece chapter 1181
It’s amazing to realize that when Imu shares the power of the Abyssal Covenant with the Five Elders, they also get this incredible ability called Omen – you can actually see it in the dark, smoky clouds around their necks! And it’s not just them; the Holy Knights have some Omen power too, but Imu can actually increase it, giving them even more! It’s such a cool system of power distribution.
If Maki’s power is purely demonic energy, then everyone influenced by Imu’s abilities also uses that same energy. This suggests that anyone who has undergone the Domi Reversi process in One Piece receives a significant power boost from Omen. As the story progresses, Eiichiro Oda will likely explore Omen further and create a balanced dynamic between these two power systems.
