This May 2026, South African movie fans can look forward to action-packed blockbusters like Mortal Kombat 2, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Backrooms. If those aren’t your style, there’s also a mix of other options, including The Devil Wears Prada 2, Beast, and Deep Water. Here’s a complete list of films showing in South African cinemas this May.

Beast (Drama / 16) – 1 May

A retired MMA champion is forced out of retirement when his brother’s life is threatened. He teams up with his old trainer to prepare for one last fight against the current champion, a ruthless competitor eager to destroy the former champion’s reputation on a global stage.

Normal (Action / 16) – 1 May

When interim sheriff Ulysses arrives in the snow-covered town of Normal, Minnesota, he expects a quiet assignment. Instead, he stumbles upon a large-scale international crime plot after helping a couple who robbed a bank – and quickly found themselves in serious danger.

Ek Din (Romance / 16) – 1 May

Rohan has feelings for his coworker, Meera, but he’s too shy to tell her. During a company trip, he gets the opportunity he’s been waiting for. He wishes he could spend just one day with Meera, and surprisingly, his wish is granted.

Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition (Documentary / TBA) – 8 May

“Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition” gives fans an inside look at the incredible story of one of rock’s most legendary bands. Using never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with current and former band members, the documentary traces Iron Maiden’s journey from small pubs in East London to headlining massive stadiums worldwide. The film also features new interviews with prominent figures like Javier Bardem, Lars Ulrich, and Chuck D, plus animated sequences of the band’s iconic mascot, Eddie, offering a unique and personal look at Iron Maiden’s dedication to their music and their devoted global fanbase.

Mortal Kombat 2 (Action / 16) – 8 May

The beloved heroes, including the newly added Johnny Cage, face off in a brutal, all-out fight to stop Shao Kahn from taking over Earthrealm and destroying everything it stands for.

Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Documentary / TBA) – 8 May

I was so lucky to see Billie Eilish live on her world tour, and now you can experience a bit of that magic too! They’ve taken footage from the tour and created this amazing concert film, and it’s being shown in incredible 3D at certain theaters. As a huge fan, I can tell you, seeing Billie perform is something special, and this looks like the next best thing to being there!

The Sheep Detectives (Comedy / TBA) – 8 May

George, a shepherd, enjoys reading mystery novels to his sheep each night, even though he doesn’t think they understand. However, when something strange happens on the farm, the sheep surprisingly take it upon themselves to solve the mystery. They begin to investigate, looking at the humans around them, and show everyone that even sheep can be clever detectives.

Obsession (Horror / 16) – 15 May

A man desperately trying to win over the woman he loves breaks a magical willow tree said to grant wishes. He gets what he wants, but quickly learns that even true desires can have terrifying consequences.

Fuze (Action / 16) – 15 May

A World War II bomb was found at a construction site in central London. Authorities quickly began evacuating the area as they worked to deal with the dangerous device, with time running out.

Tuner (Thriller / 16) – 22 May

A gifted piano tuner’s world changes completely when he realizes his precise ear and touch aren’t just for pianos – they also make him a natural at cracking safes.

Passenger (Horror / TBA) – 22 May

Shortly after starting their journey living in a van, a young couple sees a terrible car crash with a fatal outcome. They quickly find themselves hunted by a relentless, seemingly supernatural stalker who appears wherever they travel.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu (Sci-Fi / TBA) – 22 May

I’m so excited! The Empire is finally gone, but there are still some bad guys out there causing trouble. Luckily, the New Republic is trying to keep everyone safe, and they’ve teamed up with Din Djarin, that amazing Mandalorian bounty hunter, and his little apprentice, Grogu. It’s awesome to see them working together to protect the galaxy!

Backrooms (Horror / TBA) – 29 May

When a therapist’s patient vanishes into another dimension, she bravely enters the mysterious world to try and rescue him.

Deep Water (Horror / TBA) – 29 May

When a flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai experiences a critical failure, passengers must make a harrowing emergency landing in waters filled with sharks. To survive, this diverse group must put aside their differences and work together to escape the sinking plane and the circling sharks attracted by the crash.
