Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Makes Big Change to the Hidden Blade

The upcoming remake, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, will change how the hidden blade works in fights. Instead of being a weapon you can use at any time, it will now be reserved for finishing moves in specific situations. Ubisoft recently shared this information, along with many other details about what players can look forward to in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.

Hidden blades are a signature part of the Assassin’s Creed series, but they’ve evolved quite a bit over time, both in how they look and how they’re used in gameplay. In the original Black Flag, players could equip up to two hidden blades for both stealthy assassinations and regular combat. The game let you select them like any other weapon, and although they weren’t very powerful or long-ranged, their special animations made them stand out.

Black Flag Resynced Drops Equippable Hidden Blades from Assassin’s Creed 4

The upcoming remake, Black Flag Resynced, alters how hidden blades function in combat. Players will no longer be able to directly equip and use them during fights. Ubisoft explained in an April 2026 Reddit AMA that the game’s combat system has been rebuilt to focus on Edward Kenway’s sabers as his main weapons. Hidden blades will now only be used for finishing moves after successfully breaking an enemy’s defense, making them situational. This change, along with others revealed for Black Flag Resynced, indicates that the remake is a significant reimagining of the original game, going beyond a simple update.

Even when not directly fighting, Edward will still be able to use his hidden blades to silently eliminate enemies. The ability to perform quick, stealthy assassinations, like in previous games, is expected, though Ubisoft hasn’t officially confirmed it yet. Edward’s hidden blades are among the most basic in the Assassin’s Creed series, and while some players liked using them in fights, Ubisoft might have changed how they work in combat to make them feel more impactful.

The upcoming remake of Black Flag (Assassin’s Creed 4) isn’t just updating the hidden blade – it’s overhauling the entire combat system to feel more responsive. Ubisoft is adding new animations and uses for weapons like pistols. Players can also expect fresh content, including new islands to explore and more detailed cities. Naval travel has been modernized with features like autopilot and improved pathfinding, but the original game’s wanted system – where bigger pirate hunter fleets appear as your notoriety grows – will remain mostly the same.

I’m so hyped! It’s official – Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced is coming out everywhere on July 9, 2026! Apparently, this remake will be the last big Assassin’s Creed game before they release something totally new. Ubisoft Montreal is working on Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, which sounds amazing – it’s a brand new open-world adventure set in the Holy Roman Empire in the 1500s. From what I’ve heard, we can expect Hexe to drop sometime between June and November 2027. It feels like a long wait, but I can’t wait!
