Best Open-World Adventure Games That Let You Play At Your Own Pace

Open-world games offer a unique sense of freedom and adventure, and their popularity is continuing to grow. Several of this year’s biggest hits, like Pokemon Pokopia, Crimson Desert, and Windrose, fall into this genre. Many of the most exciting games planned for release in 2026 also promise that same open-world experience – the ability to explore anywhere and discover what lies beyond.

Most open-world games let you explore and progress however you like, and few force you into a specific path. This list focuses on open-world adventure games – not role-playing games – that are particularly relaxed and unhurried. These games give you the freedom to find your own way, letting you decide when – or even if – you want to tackle the main story.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The Gold Standard In Free-Form Open-World Immersive Design

When people think of open-world games you can really take your time with, Red Dead Redemption 2 is often the first that comes to mind. Its relaxed pace and the calm, beautiful setting of the Old West encourage players to slow down and truly lose themselves in the game’s historical world and the details of everyday life. Interestingly, some players struggle with this unique, unhurried style and stop playing early on, which is unfortunate because it’s what makes the game so special.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has a unique flow to its gameplay. It encourages players to slow down and appreciate the little things – the realistic details, how everything connects, and how alive the world feels. This makes it ideal for relaxed play, where you can enjoy side activities like exploring towns, completing small tasks, hunting, or simply wandering and discovering secrets. Interestingly, this slower pace actually makes the game’s intense action sequences even more impactful. The story and gameplay generally work well together, and the game even adds to the immersion by having characters check in on you if you spend too long ignoring the main narrative. It’s a truly impressive open-world game.

Crimson Desert

Learning From the Best… All Of Them

Even though it’s set in a unique world blending steampunk and medieval fantasy, Crimson Desert clearly takes a lot of inspiration from Red Dead Redemption 2. It feels like the most similar modern open-world game, especially in how its world feels alive and creates unexpected moments. However, Crimson Desert gives players even more freedom. The complicated story doesn’t really pull you in, so the game encourages you to explore the world of Pywel and create your own adventures.

Wow, Crimson Desert is HUGE. Seriously, the world they’ve built is one of the biggest and most detailed I’ve ever seen, with tons of verticality – you’re always looking up or down at something. I’m told you could easily spend 50+ hours just in the first region, Hernand, and still not see everything! It’s not just a ton of side quests either. There’s something for every kind of gamer. I can explore and hunt for treasure, fight to take over enemy bases, solve puzzles, even fix parts of a broken sky realm called the Abyss. Plus, I can build up my camp, farm, trade, gather resources… the list goes on and on. It’s honestly a bit overwhelming, but in a good way!

The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

Striking A Perfect Balance For Unrestricted Open-World Sandbox Gameplay

As a huge fan of Breath of the Wild, I was honestly wondering if Tears of the Kingdom could even top it – that first game was just incredible! But it absolutely does. It kept everything I loved about the original – that beautiful art style and the freedom to explore anywhere – but then added so much more to do. It’s seriously raised the bar, and now I’m left wondering… where do they even go from here? What could they possibly add next?

As a gamer, I have to say Tears of the Kingdom is something special. It’s not quite a full sandbox game, but honestly, it feels like you can do anything. They’ve added awesome new powers for Link and these incredible Sky Islands to explore, but it’s the way everything works together – especially the crafting system, which lets you build almost anything you can imagine – that really blew me away. I love that I could approach quests and puzzles however I wanted, without feeling bogged down by complicated systems – it’s way better than some other games, like Crimson Desert in that regard. Seriously, there’s so much to see and do in Tears of the Kingdom that it could easily keep me hooked for months, and every time I play, I’m surprised and incredibly satisfied with the results.

Ghost Of Yotei

Masters The Flow Of Adventure

Okay, so Ghost of Yotei takes everything I loved about the last game and really runs with it. This time around, instead of rushing to save my country, the story is more personal – it’s about getting ready to take on these six powerful leaders. Honestly, it fits the game so well! The way you explore, letting the wind and birds guide you instead of just following a map, is incredible. It’s all about discovering things naturally, and building up your strength and finding allies. The world is gorgeous too. I found myself constantly getting sidetracked, just wanting to soak it all in instead of rushing to the next mission. It’s seriously immersive.

Like other games in the series, Ghost of Yotei features a beautiful and evocative world filled with things to do. You can take on side quests like bounty hunting, learn from mentors, find better equipment, experience flashbacks, and hunt down those who harmed Atsu’s family. Although Ghost of Yotei has a smaller, more focused map than other games on this list, it still offers 50 to 60 hours of gameplay, making it perfect for playing in short bursts over several weeks.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach

Strand Adventure Game Built On Freedom

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is a worthy sequel that successfully builds upon the unique foundation of the original game. It stays true to Hideo Kojima’s “strand” genre while giving players much more freedom to play how they want. The game encourages experimentation, and unlike the first installment, immediately provides access to most of the tools and faster delivery options unlocked in the original. Players also have greatly expanded building options to create lasting structures within the shared open world.

As expected from Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has a very story-driven experience, with over six hours of cinematic cutscenes featuring famous actors. However, at its heart, the game still focuses on the core elements of the series: traveling across stunning landscapes, exploring the world, making connections with others, and finding beauty in solitude. The game’s environments are among the most visually impressive in gaming, and the soundtrack perfectly complements the experience.

STALKER 2: Heart Of Chornobyl

Just You And The World That Wants You Dead

As a huge fan of the STALKER series, I can already tell STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is going to be one of those games I just lose myself in for hours. The Zone is massive and completely seamless – no loading screens at all! It’s even more immersive than the previous games. There’s so much to discover, from hidden loot and powerful artifacts to just really interesting places to explore. It’s the kind of game where you carefully plan what you’re going to do, but things always end up going sideways because there’s danger and something interesting around every corner. It’s a slower, more deliberate experience, and I’m really looking forward to it.

The story in STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is significant, with important missions that lock you in once you begin them – sometimes you’ll need to act quickly to save characters. However, the game is generally very open. While there are a few areas initially inaccessible, you can mostly ignore the main story whenever you want. You’re free to explore, get ready for tougher challenges, and collect weapons and artifacts, storing them as you find them.
