Fans of Borderlands 4 have found hints in the game’s code that suggest what the next downloadable character, or ‘Vault Hunter,’ might be. This discovery follows the recent release of the first story expansion, ‘Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned,’ and the new playable character, C4SH. Gearbox Software has announced that another expansion and a new Vault Hunter are planned, but details are still scarce.
The newest Borderlands game has received some criticism regarding its updates after release. Many players felt that the first story DLC for Borderlands 4 was too expensive β at $30, it only offered about 2-3 hours of gameplay. However, the new playable character introduced in the DLC, C4SH, has been well-received and has fans looking forward to future characters that may be added to the game.
Borderlands 4 Fans Think They’ve Found DLC 2’s Vault Hunter in New Datamine
Okay, so a Reddit user, jakobsestate, did some digging in the subtitle files for Borderlands 4, and it’s super interesting! They found the name “Loveless” popping up a lot in the unused dialogue. It seems like this Loveless might be the next Vault Hunter we’re getting in the second DLC! It’s a bit weird because they use “we” when talking, so we don’t know exactly who or what Loveless is, but the name being all over the place definitely makes me think they’re planned to be playable. I’m so hyped to find out more!
The ‘Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned’ DLC features the character Mancubus making comments about the Vault Hunters. One line, “it seems you’ve suffered an unbounded recursion, eh, mistress Loveless,” originally led players to believe it was a reference to Vex from a potential Borderlands 4. However, recently discovered dialogue suggests ‘Loveless’ is actually a different character. Given that this line appears with other comments aimed at the Vault Hunters, many believe it could be a hint about a new playable character coming in a future game.
Adding to the evidence, a user named jakobsestate discovered the name “Loveless” within the game’s unused dialogue, alongside similar lines for the other Vault Hunters. A Reddit post shows the line “Yes! This is Loveless β We are a Vault Hunter” right next to a comparable line for the existing Vault Hunter Rafa: “Yes! This is Rafa. I’m a Vault Hunter.” They also found another line saying, “We are Loveless. I am looking for a woman named Ellie.” Although this line has a grammatical error with the pronouns, it strongly suggests Loveless is a playable character.

Fans are already buzzing about a new character named Loveless, trying to figure out who they are and how they might play in the game. Some have noticed Loveless uses “we” instead of “I,” leading to theories about a hivemind-like ability. Others think Loveless could be an Eridian Vault Hunter. Another idea is that Loveless is simply using “we” as a way to show off, similar to Aurelia Hammerlock from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. For now, though, everything is just speculation until the next Borderlands 4 DLC is officially announced.
