Boruto’s Code Is Setting Up To Become Even Stronger Than Jura

This article reveals major plot details from the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime and manga, including the most recent events. Be warned: spoilers ahead!

The recent arc of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex focused on the Shinju Clones and hinted at Code’s possible return. While initially presented as a strong villain, Code hasn’t lived up to expectations in the series, consistently being defeated by his opponents. After building an army to attack Konoha and target Boruto Uzumaki, Code was easily overcome by Boruto’s newfound abilities and even disrespected by his own powerful Shinju Clones.

Readers have become increasingly frustrated with Code’s development. He keeps getting stronger, but repeatedly fails to deliver as a compelling villain, leading many to lose interest and label him a weak antagonist. While some still hope he’ll eventually live up to his potential, a lot of fans have given up on him. He’s likely still around because the creators, Ikemoto and Kishimoto, have plans for him. It makes sense, then, that he’ll become even more powerful – potentially surpassing Jura – and finally become the formidable enemy everyone has been anticipating for years.

Code Created Jura and the Other Shinju Clones

Code was considered as a host for Isshiki’s power, but ultimately wasn’t chosen. Despite this, he survived the selection process and remained fiercely loyal to Isshiki, harboring intense jealousy towards Kawaki. This loyalty secured his position within the Kara organization, even though he became more powerful than Jigen—who typically eliminated anyone who threatened his leadership. To prevent a conflict, Amado placed limiters on Code’s abilities, with only Amado able to remove them. After breaking free, Code was poised to become a major threat, but currently, he hasn’t proven as formidable as the Shinju Clones.

During the last part of the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations series, Code used special marks on the Ten-Tails to make powerful, human-like beings called Claw Grimes. These creatures followed his commands, allowing him to quickly build an army. Claw Grimes are strong, fairly intelligent, and have a constant need to absorb energy from other living things. Eventually, the remnants of the Ten-Tails transformed into Jura, who is believed to be a living form of the Tailed Beast itself.

Jura is significantly more intelligent than Claw Grimes, and unlike them, he’s self-aware and driven to learn and consume a specific target – currently the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, Himawari Uzumaki. This means Jura isn’t a typical Claw Grime; he’s a Human God Tree, or a Shinju Clone. Other Claw Grimes can also evolve into Shinju Clones by sealing a ‘template’ – a target – which then allows a new God Tree to grow. These clones inherit traits and potentially feelings from their templates, remaining focused on that original target. However, they also aim to consume an Otsutsuki member to become a full God Tree, similar to how the Otsutsuki use members of their own clan as sacrifices to create Chakra Fruits. Importantly, these Shinju Clones don’t follow Code’s commands; they are loyal to Jura.

We Divine Trees once instinctively drained the life energy – chakra – from every living creature, past and present, to create a special fruit. However, things have changed since Code awakened our ability to think for ourselves. We’ve evolved beyond that original purpose.

The Shinju Clones were created by Code, and are surprisingly stronger than him. While they know Code is their creator – Jura even expressed gratitude – they don’t seem to respect him. It’s unknown why Claw Grimes transformed into these clones, but one theory suggests it’s linked to the Otsutsuki chakra remaining within Code from the White Karma given to him by Isshiki Otsutsuki, meant to continue the Otsutsuki’s goals. However, because this happened after Eida’s all-powerful ability took effect, it’s also possible her unique powers played a role in creating these sentient, godlike trees.

It’s Time for Code to Return to the Story

Code showed up at the beginning of the Two Blue Vortex story, taking Boruto to the Ten-Tails, but then disappeared for a while. Since then, the story has been mainly about the Shinju Clones, who have become the biggest danger. It’s safe to assume Code is extremely angry about being defeated by both Boruto and the Shinju.

Despite staying out of sight since Chapter 4, he’s been secretly planning his next move. He’ll likely reappear once the Shinju Clones are dealt with, and might even help defeat them – he’s determined to get revenge. This determination exists even though he previously agreed to kill Boruto and Kashin Koji in exchange for a Chakra Fruit. After that, he could remain an enemy, or temporarily team up with others simply to eliminate Jura.

Now that Code knows he’s outmatched by Boruto, he’s probably looking for ways to get stronger. As the leader of what’s left of the Kara organization, it’s likely he’ll return as a powerful enemy. If the Clones were created from his remaining energy, Code might even become more dangerous than Jura. With the recent storyline hinting at his return, we might find out what he’s planning soon.

Code Should Have Been Nearly Invincible By Now

Although Boruto currently seems capable of defeating Code with his Rasengan: Uzuhiko, it’s unlikely this will stay true as the story unfolds. It’s a letdown to see how weak Code appears now, especially considering the build-up to the Omnipotence Arc where his restrictions were lifted. The hype surrounding his potential makes his current power level – being weaker than Jura – seem disappointing. It’s frustrating that he’s been relegated to a supporting role, because as the supposed successor to Isshiki’s power through White Karma, he could have served as a stepping stone towards the anticipated final battle against Shibai Otsutsuki, who is hinted to be the manga’s ultimate villain.

The story used the restrictions placed on Code mainly to build tension. They kept him out of the action temporarily, introduced new enemies, and then allowed him to return as a much more powerful and terrifying villain – it felt like this was always the plan. It’s likely these limiters were also what caused Claw Grimes to evolve. Jura’s strength probably comes partly from Code’s powers, in addition to the power he already receives from the Ten-Tails.

I’m still wondering why Code seems so much weaker than we expected. But after watching Two Blue Vortex, it’s become clear that anything can happen now that Eida has trapped everyone – there are a lot of mysteries left. One interesting possibility is that Jura might actually become Code’s new power source. Some fans thought Code might absorb a defeated Jura during his fight with Boruto and Kawaki, and while that didn’t happen then, it could still be how the story moves forward as Jura’s part comes to an end.

If Code could gain Jura’s abilities, he’d become much more powerful. This could happen if Jura was defeated, or potentially by consuming his Thornsoul, though it’s unknown how that would work. Another possibility is someone like Amado or Kawaki offering Code a deal to help fight Jura, which would also make him stronger. However, absorbing Jura’s power – maybe by eating the Thornsoul – seems like the most effective route, as it could give him abilities comparable to those granted by a Chakra Fruit.

Can Code Break Free from Being a Pawn?

Many fans are disappointed with Code because he hasn’t lived up to his potential. Despite being presented as a major villain, he consistently gets manipulated and used by others instead of being a true threat. In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 4, even Matsuri points out he’s easily controlled, and this pattern has frustrated viewers. Hopefully, he’ll have a more significant role to play in the upcoming storyline.

It would be a waste to have this character remain unsuccessful, so Code will probably find a way to break free and start pursuing his own goals, even achieving significant power. He’s determined to become a Celestial Being, though it’s unlikely he’ll go through with sacrificing Boruto or Kawaki to get there. While some might want to see him turn good, Code is the kind of villain who should reach his peak power just before his final defeat. Given his personality, he doesn’t deserve a redemption story; he deserves to fully realize his potential as a villain and then be decisively defeated.
