The “F1” series was initially introduced 25 years back, simultaneously releasing three titles – “F1 2000”, “F1 Championship Season 2000”, and “F1 Manager”. Since 2009, the primary series has annually launched a new game. With “F1 25” slated for launch on May 30, it appears that Codemasters will persist in producing top-tier F1 games amidst a competitive racing game market.

In the future, growth might involve exploring a different gaming platform, as suggested by comments from the game’s creative director, Gavin Cooper. During an interview with racing game news site Traxion, Cooper hinted that Codemasters executives are considering the potential of the next Nintendo Switch (Switch 2) and its capabilities for future Formula One games. According to Cooper, they are discussing whether the console is suitable for delivering the kind of F1 gaming experience we’re accustomed to, although he has not confirmed any official announcement other than acknowledging that this option is under consideration.

F1 Games May Make Long-Awaited Return to Nintendo

Should Codemasters’ evaluation of the potential Switch 2 prove beneficial for gamers, it might herald the comeback of the primary series onto a Nintendo console following a 14-year hiatus. Although a spin-off kart racing game titled F1 Race Stars was released on the Wii in 2012 and a simulation named F1 Manager 2024’s drivers unexpectedly appeared on the Switch last year, the last mainline game to grace a Nintendo device was F1 2011, which was playable on the 3DS.

Currently, it might not be ideal for Codemasters to explore new platforms like Switch 2 for their racing series, given that the latest installment, F1 24, received a significant drop in positive reviews compared to its predecessors since 2016, with specific concerns raised about the game’s mid-race objectives. The early access for F1 25 starts on May 27, so we won’t have to wait long to see if Codemasters has managed to address these issues ahead of its release.
