I’ve been watching the second season of Netflix’s Devil May Cry, and it’s introduced a lot of new characters. It got me thinking about who the most powerful ones actually are. After giving it some thought, I’ve put together a list of what I consider to be the strongest characters in this season of the show, which was beautifully animated by Studio Mir and brought to us by Adi Shankar.
This list ranks the strongest characters from Devil May Cry 2, considering not just how powerful they seem, but also their skills, fighting style, and overall story. Here’s a look at the most formidable characters in the anime.
1. Mundus
Undoubtedly, The Most Powerful Being in Season 2
- The Absolute Lord of Makai
- Intelligent beyond comprehension
- Powerful and cunning enough to dethrone Argosax (twice)
I’ve learned about Mundus, and he’s an incredibly old and powerful being. He started out as a follower of Argosax, then rose to become one of three archdemons ruling Makai. But he wasn’t content sharing power for long. Eventually, he took complete control of Makai and has ruled as a supreme being for centuries. It’s like he’s become a god watching over his own world, and he doesn’t tolerate any defiance – he rules with a very firm hand, a fist of stone, if you will.
His power is almost limitless, and even the formidable Argosax struggled against him. While he initially needed assistance to defeat a Demon Lord, their rematch was a clear victory, despite Argosax not being at his full strength. Mundus himself acknowledges that only one demon rivaled his power: the Demon Knight Sparda. Sparda, Dante and Vergil’s father, was the only being capable of challenging him and ultimately stopped his endless ambition by severing the connection between the demon world and Earth.
2. Sparda
The Only Demon Considered By Mundus as An Equal
- The only demon Mundus considered an equal
- Protector of Makai & Earth
- Decimated Entire Armies
Sparda was an incredibly powerful being who lived for centuries, despite not being physically imposing like many other demons. He originally served Argosax as a high-ranking general, and later became Mundus’s closest advisor and enforcer. Throughout his long life, Sparda fought and won countless battles – likely more than any other demon. He was perceptive enough to recognize Mundus’s growing corruption and courageous enough to stand against him. Their clashes were legendary, with neither demon ultimately gaining the upper hand.
Sparda abandoned the demon world, fleeing to Earth to escape Mundus’s endless desire for power. He closed the gateway between the worlds, and became a legendary warrior. Even Mundus admitted that Sparda was a uniquely powerful demon general, and the only being he ever considered an equal after Sparda turned against him.
3. Argosax
Former Demon Lord, And Incarnation of Chaos
- Chaos Incarnate
- Former Lord of Makai
- A Primordial Demon That Feeds on Souls
Let me tell you about Argosax – he was unbelievably powerful! At his peak, this demon lord actually ruled both the demon world, Makai, and Earth! He didn’t just conquer, he fed on the souls of demons and humans – basically, anyone! His power was on a godly scale, seriously! Even when he was double-crossed by Mundus and his followers and defeated, he wasn’t truly destroyed. He managed to trap his essence within something called the Arcana, and his mind remained… just waiting for a chance to come back. It’s a terrifying thought, but also kind of amazing!
After a long time, he influenced a young man named Arius, turning him into a powerful, immortal sorcerer. The ultimate goal was to control Arius and be reborn, allowing him to destroy the world of Mundus and conquer both Makai and Earth – though he wouldn’t be as strong as he once was. It’s frightening to think how much more powerful he could have become if he’d collected enough souls before the final battle.
4. Vergil
The Eldest of the Sparda Siblings
- The True Heir to Sparda
- Fast as Lightning
- Has Two Demon Forms
Vergil is nearly as powerful as Mundus and, like his father Sparda, has risen to a high rank as a demon lord. He’s an incredibly swift, lethal, and accurate fighter, unmatched among demons. However, his human half is seen as a weakness – Mundus believes Vergil would surpass even Sparda if he were a pure demon.
Vergil is the stronger twin. He’s more self-controlled and has endured a tougher life than Dante. He’s mastered his demonic powers to a greater extent, and his sword skills, sharpened through intense battles in Makai, have made him a terrifyingly skilled demon.

5. Dante
Far From His Versions In The Games
- A Versatile Fighter
- His Talents Are Just Awakening
- Fights More by Instinct than Technique
When it comes to power levels, Dante, the popular demon hunter, is quite strong. While his abilities might not always seem impressive, he’s actually more powerful than most demons and, surprisingly, has a lot in common with his brother, Vergil. However, Dante struggles with past trauma, which prevents him from fully controlling his Devil Trigger transformation.
Initially, Dante was the more gifted and quick-learning brother, surpassing Vergil. However, a devastating family tragedy and their subsequent separation caused Dante to become complacent and lose his drive – or so the story suggests. He hasn’t reached his full strength yet, but when he does, everything will change in terms of power.
6. Arius
Genius, Sorcerer, And Walking Money Bag
- Powerful Sorcerer
- Has lived for over 600 years
- A genius inventor and billionaire
Arius is a master of dark magic, one of the most powerful in the Devil May Cry world. Serving Argosax, he’s lived many lives, remembering each one and constantly improving his skills as both a sorcerer and an inventor. He’s become incredibly advanced in magic, science, and alchemy, making him far more powerful than most humans.
Having established the Uroboros company, he rose to prominence as a hidden power broker within the US Military. He orchestrated President Hopper’s election, effectively controlling him, all while secretly working to revive his master and leading a force of demonic duplicates.
7. Jester (Arkham)
A Dangerous And Psychopathic Half-Demon That Inspires Dread in Everyone
- His true powers are yet to be disclosed
- Skillful schemer and corrupter
- Outsmarted Mundus, Arius, and Argosax
I’ve been following the Devil May Cry series, and I remember when Jester – also known as John Arkham – was introduced through a flashback. He’s a really unusual character, a hybrid of human and demon. It turns out he used to be fully human, and he’s actually Lady’s father. He was a brilliant researcher, completely focused on pushing the limits of what humans could achieve. But that obsession led him down a dark path, and he ended up transforming himself into something monstrous, essentially fracturing his own personality in the process.
This creature, a half-demon born from the entity that possessed Arkham, has a strange and irritating power: he can appear and move between dimensions. He’s clearly very powerful, or Mundus would have already eliminated him. He secretly worked for Arius, assisting in the plan to bring Argosax back. He could potentially be the primary villain in a future Devil May Cry season.
8. Lady
Has Shown An Extreme Change Compared to Season 1
- Has grown a great deal, becoming a full-fledged demon slayer
- Has above-human capabilities and reflexes
- Skillful marksman and martial artist
Mary Arkham, called Lady, carries deep emotional scars from past experiences, and her first encounter with Dante wasn’t easy. But through their connection and her own self-reflection, she’s become even more resolute in her fight against the forces responsible for the tragic deaths of the Makaian refugees at the hands of Darkcom.
She’s determined to prove herself and is also helping him become a better fighter. Now known as Lady, she’s incredibly skilled in combat and carries a wide range of weapons crafted by Nell Goldstein.
9. Chi (Lucia)
A Cloned Demon, Subservient To Arius
- A cloned demon with powerful abilities
- Smart and cunning
- Capable of flying at high speeds
Chi, also known as Lucia, is a dangerous and skilled fighter who uses two karambit blades. She can also transform into a winged demon. As Arius’s most trusted and ruthless lieutenant, this genetically engineered demoness has faithfully served him for many years.
Chi is cold-hearted and ruthless, showing no emotion over the deaths of those around her. She believes she is better than others and feels no fear. Even at the end, she remained fiercely loyal, a result of extensive brainwashing and psychological conditioning. She was, in essence, a flawlessly programmed soldier.
10. The Secretaries
The Results Of Years of Experimentation
- Arius private army of demon clones
- Similar abilities to Lucia’s
- Stronger in great numbers, unable to feel fear
Arius commands a private army of cloned demons, all created from the genetic material of Lucia and Chi. Inspired by the Secretary Bird, these clones are fiercely loyal, obeying only Arius or their direct commander, and will fight without hesitation, even to their own destruction, once given an order.
These demons are powerful, especially when they attack together. When they transform using their Devil Trigger, they resemble the original clone, growing dark feathers and razor-sharp claws to tear through enemies.
