Dragon Ball: 7 Times Goku Got Outsmarted By His Opponent

Goku is a remarkably skilled martial artist, considered one of the best in Dragon Ball and throughout anime. However, he’s not perfect. He often makes the mistake of underestimating opponents and hoping they’ll act rationally. While Goku is usually good at anticipating his enemies’ attacks, he’s been tricked and outsmarted several times.

Throughout the entire Dragon Ball series, from the original to Dragon Ball Super, Goku’s tendency to overestimate himself and misjudge opponents has often led to him being outmaneuvered. While he sometimes manages to win by fighting strategically, holding back a powerful move, or achieving a new transformation, even these aren’t enough to fully protect him from the consequences of his errors.

7. Jackie Chun Wins By Tricking Goku Into Copying Him

World Tournament Saga

In the early days of Dragon Ball, Goku was surprisingly defeated by Jackie Chun during the final match of the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament. Although young Goku was incredibly strong, he was still inexperienced compared to Master Roshi. Goku’s stamina kept the fight going, but Roshi ultimately won by realizing Goku simply mirrored his techniques.

Man, that final fight between Jackie Chun and Goku was incredible! They were both totally spent, but Jackie Chun was a genius. He tricked Goku into trying to copy his jump kick, and because Jackie Chun has such longer legs, his kick landed right on Goku. Goku barely touched him! Goku actually got up first, but that kick had way more impact than it seemed, and he ended up getting knocked out cold. That’s how Jackie Chun won the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai – what a victory!

6. King Piccolo Waited to Use Tien as a Hostage

Demon King Piccolo Saga

In the final battle of the original Dragon Ball series, Goku and Demon King Piccolo are equally powerful opponents. Goku uses everything he’s learned in a desperate attempt to defeat Piccolo, essentially marking the end of his childhood. Just when Goku seems to be winning, Piccolo exploits Goku’s trusting nature to turn the tables.

During his battle with Goku, Piccolo takes Tien Shinhan hostage. Goku is prepared to kill both Tien and Piccolo, intending to use the Dragon Balls to bring Tien back to life, but Piccolo ruins this plan by revealing he’s already destroyed Shenron, the wish-granting dragon. With Goku defeated and helpless, King Piccolo breaks three of Goku’s limbs, leaving only one arm intact – a mistake that would later prove to be Piccolo’s downfall.

5. Piccolo Pretends to Be Down to Cripple Goku

Piccolo Jr. Saga

During his battle with Goku at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, Piccolo Jr. avoids the errors his father made. Towards the end of the fight, he tricks Goku into thinking his Meteor Combo was successful, feigning defeat. Then, while Goku is momentarily relaxed, Piccolo unexpectedly attacks with a powerful energy beam, striking him in the chest.

After Goku was knocked down, Piccolo damaged all his limbs to prevent him from using the attack that killed the Demon King Piccolo. Surprisingly, Goku turned the tables and tricked Piccolo, having secretly kept his ability to fly hidden. He then powerfully launched himself at Piccolo, ultimately defeating him and winning the World Martial Arts Tournament.

4. Captain Ginyu Steals Goku’s Body & Leaves Him For Dead

Captain Ginyu Saga

At the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, Goku discovers he’s a Saiyan and wants to be different from Vegeta. Throughout the Namek arc, this leads him to avoid killing his enemies, even when it would be strategically smart. He could easily defeat the Ginyu Force, but instead, he tries to reason with them, which ultimately causes problems during his battle with Captain Ginyu.

Goku had the chance to defeat Ginyu right away, but he hesitated. Ginyu used this to his advantage, seriously injuring himself and then switching bodies with Goku. This left Goku trapped in a failing body he couldn’t control. Luckily, Ginyu didn’t know how to use Goku’s abilities, like the Kaioken, giving Goku a chance to switch back when Ginyu became focused on fighting Vegeta.

3. Frieza Was Holding Back His Full Power All Along

Frieza Saga

Goku gets in over his head when he fights Frieza on Namek. Even though King Kai repeatedly warned him to stay away from Frieza, Goku confidently decides to fight anyway. He quickly realizes his mistake. Frieza is much stronger than Goku expected, and what’s worse, he’s barely trying – holding back most of his power throughout the entire battle.

Even with his most powerful attacks like Kaioken times twenty and the Spirit Bomb, Goku wasn’t strong enough to consistently overcome Frieza. It’s surprising he won at all, as Frieza could have easily defeated him at any moment. While Goku fought incredibly well and showed impressive tactics, Frieza seemed to be toying with him. If Goku hadn’t achieved the Super Saiyan transformation, he would have been defeated on Namek.

2. Sorbet Shoots Goku While His Guard is Down

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F

In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, it’s shown that Goku often gets careless during fights. This happens towards the end when, after beating Golden Frieza, he starts talking to him and gets shot by Sorbet, almost costing him his life. Sorbet’s attack is powerful enough to injure Goku even while he’s in his Super Saiyan Blue form.

Throughout the anime, Goku deliberately reverts to his normal state to emphasize that he sometimes lets his guard down when it matters most. To make things worse, Sorbet was secretly waiting for a chance to attack Goku during his fight with Frieza. Had Goku been more aware of his surroundings, he could have defeated Golden Frieza before Frieza destroyed the Earth.

1. Moro Lies to Goku & Nearly Destroys the Earth

The Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga

One of the most questionable decisions Goku makes in Dragon Ball is giving the villain Moro a Senzu Bean. While Goku believes he can win once he fully masters Perfected Ultra Instinct, it ends up being a mistake. Moro pretends he’ll leave peacefully, but immediately attacks again. This is especially bad because Moro’s body is already unstable from absorbing Angel Ki, and the fight causes him to merge with the Earth.

Planet Moro nearly destroys Earth, and even Vegeta’s powerful technique can’t stop him from absorbing the planet’s energy. Goku is only able to defeat Moro because Uub shares his divine energy, giving Goku the boost he needs. However, it’s disappointing to see Goku get tricked so easily, even for him.
