A fan project has reimagined Final Fantasy 16 as a classic JRPG for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). This ‘demake,’ now available as a free download, includes chiptune versions of the original game’s soundtrack and updated pixel art created by fans.
Released initially as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in June 2023, Final Fantasy 16 represented a new direction for the Final Fantasy series. It was the first main installment to receive a mature rating, and its focus on action-based combat proved divisive among players. Highlights of the game included the epic battles featuring massive creatures called Eikons – like Phoenix and Ifrit – and its critically acclaimed soundtrack by Masayoshi Soken.
Final Fantasy 16 Fans Turn The Game Into A 16-Bit Demake
Even though Final Fantasy 16 has action-packed combat, fans who prefer classic, turn-based RPGs can now experience a retro version. Final Fantasy 16 Demake is a free download on Itch.io. Created by Xvibit, this version reimagines FF16 as a traditional JRPG inspired by games like Final Fantasy 6, featuring 16-bit graphics. It also includes 18 musical remixes of the original Final Fantasy 16 soundtrack, including popular tracks like “Land of Eikons” and “Away.” The Demake is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and only takes up about 142 MB of space on Windows. While it can be played on a Steam Deck, some extra setup might be needed.
Players can control Final Fantasy 16 Demake using either a keyboard and mouse or a modern gamepad. While the battles feel similar to Final Fantasy 6, there’s a key difference: Clive’s powerful Eikonic abilities have cooldowns that depend on how many turns have passed. For instance, his Phoenix Shift takes four turns to become available again. Currently, Final Fantasy 16 Demake is a relatively short experience, with the developer, Xvibit, estimating an average playtime of about 30 minutes. Because of this, many of the abilities that made Clive so strong in the main Final Fantasy 16 game aren’t included in this demake.
The creator of Final Fantasy 16 Demake built the game using RPG Maker, and crafted all the pixel art, sprites, and animations in Aseprite. They also confirmed that the game includes sound effects borrowed and altered from older Final Fantasy titles like Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy 4. Importantly, the developer, Xvibit, stated that no AI tools were used during the game’s creation.
Fit the 9 games into the grid.

Even though the Final Fantasy 16 Demake currently only recreates the first part of Final Fantasy 16, fans are enjoying it so far. It’s still unclear if the creators will eventually remake the entire game.
