Firefox’s 271 Oopsies: Claude Mythos Plays Bug Bounty Hero

Well, slap my browser and call me impressed! Mozilla just rolled out Firefox 150, patching a whopping 271 security vulnerabilities-all thanks to Anthropic’s Claude Mythos, the AI equivalent of a digital bloodhound with a magnifying glass.

This little escapade is part of Project Glasswing, Anthropic’s fancy-sounding initiative that lets Mythos sniff around critical infrastructure like a dog in a butcher shop. Limited access, of course-we wouldn’t want it getting too cozy with the power grid.

In a blog post that reads like a tech thriller, Firefox CTO Bobby Holley mused about the olden days of browser security. Apparently, it was all about playing whack-a-mole with exploits, hoping the moles got tired before we did. “Make it expensive, make it complicated,” they said. “They’ll give up,” they said. Spoiler alert: they didn’t.

“Imagine finding 271 reasons to panic in one go. It’s like discovering your house is built on quicksand while a tornado’s brewing. Fun times,” Holley quipped, probably while clutching a stress ball shaped like a bug.

Since February, the Firefox team has been AI-ing the heck out of their browser, using tools so advanced they probably come with a “Do Not Operate After Midnight” warning. Their earlier fling with Anthropic’s Opus 4.6 model fixed 22 issues in Firefox 148. But this time? They went from 22 to 271. That’s not just progress-that’s a full-on bug apocalypse.

And the best part? According to Holley, none of these bugs were beyond the reach of a “human elite researcher.” So, no, AI isn’t stealing jobs yet-it’s just making us look slow.

“Encouragingly, we haven’t been outsmarted by our own creation. Yet,” he added, probably while eyeing Mythos suspiciously.

Why Crypto Folks Should Care (And Maybe Panic a Little)

Meanwhile, in the crypto world, exchanges are sweating bullets. Mythos isn’t just good at finding bugs-it’s like a locksmith with a grudge, picking zero-day vulnerabilities in every major OS and browser. Hot wallets? Decentralized apps? Oh, they’re quaking. Sure, private keys are safe, but tricking users into approving dodgy transactions? Child’s play for this AI.

Coinbase, ever the trendsetter, is already knocking on Anthropic’s door. Because if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em-or at least use their AI for customer support in 100+ regions. Baby steps.
