The release date for Grand Theft Auto 6 is set for November 19, 2026. While everyone has been talking about the story mode, fans are now eager to find out when the popular online multiplayer mode will be available.
Rockstar Games hasn’t announced when the online multiplayer version of their game will be available, and they haven’t even officially said it’s in development. However, a reliable source known for sharing industry information recently suggested a possible timeframe, which surprised many players.
A user named TheGhostOfHope claims that the online version of GTA 6 will launch about a month after the game itself is released. If true, this means we could see the new Grand Theft Auto Online sometime in mid-to-late December, before the end of 2026, during the holiday season.
The information was shared without any supporting evidence or confirmation. The source, known as TheGhostOfHope, said it came from an unnamed person and admitted it was up to others to decide if they believed it. While this should be considered, TheGhostOfHope has proven reliable in the past, which lends some credibility to the report.
I’ve heard the plan for GTA 6 is to release the online component about a month after the game itself comes out, but whether that’s true or not is up to you to decide.

TheGhostOfHope is well-known for accurately leaking information about Call of Duty games – so much so that Activision, the game’s publisher, sent them a legal notice asking them to stop. While they’ve also been right about leaks for other games, reporting on GTA 6 is a bit different for them, and that’s something to consider when looking at this latest claim.
This release schedule isn’t unusual for Rockstar. When GTA Online launched in 2013, it came just two weeks after the main GTA 5 game. Red Dead Redemption 2 followed a similar pattern, with its online multiplayer beta starting about a month after the story mode was released. If Rockstar uses the same approach with GTA 6, a December launch makes sense, as it fits their usual timing.
The fan community, predictably, has not landed on a single opinion.
Many players, especially those on Reddit, predicted the online mode would launch around early 2027. They believed this timing would allow players to fully enjoy the single-player story of GTA 6 first, and give Rockstar enough time to create a well-developed and polished online experience.
Some fans strongly opposed launching GTA Online close to November 19th. They believed the single-player story deserved more attention and worried that releasing the online multiplayer mode too soon would overshadow it.
Many people believe a one-month wait is fair. In replies to TheGhostOfHope’s post, those who agree with the timeframe explained that four weeks gives most players enough time to finish the story, achieve their goals in the game mode, and look forward to new content.
Launching in December makes good financial sense. Releasing the online multiplayer part of the game during the busy holiday shopping season could encourage more people to buy the main game. While GTA 6 is predicted to be a huge success anyway, releasing multiplayer in the last three months of the year would be a boost for Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher, and likely increase their stock price with the added holiday sales.
Even after the release of GTA 6, the existing version of GTA Online connected to GTA 5 will still be playable. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, confirmed this during a recent earnings call.
Strauss Zelnick reassured investors that Take-Two Interactive will continue to support GTA Online, citing its dedicated player base. He highlighted the recent ‘A Safehouse in the Hills’ update as a major success, driving strong player engagement and revenue even after 12 years. Zelnick emphasized that consistently delivering high-quality new content keeps players coming back to the game, regardless of how long it’s been available.
Grand Theft Auto Online was the main driver of a 27% increase in recurring revenue this quarter. The GTA+ subscription service now has twice as many subscribers as it did a year ago, and the company plans to add even more benefits for its members soon.
Last year, Zelnick stated that they continue to support their games as long as players are actively playing them. This is good news for players who still use older consoles or play on PC and might have to wait a long time for a version of GTA 6. While the next game will have its own online experience and may eventually become the main one, both games are expected to offer online play for a while.
We don’t have many firm details about GTA 6 Online yet. However, a recent legal case revealed some information. Rockstar mentioned a Discord message during the proceedings, which described internal playtests involving 32 players. This is similar to the 30-player limit in GTA 5, indicating Rockstar is likely keeping or even improving the online multiplayer system.
Recent leaks suggest Rockstar is planning to continue offering a constantly updated, online experience, but might give players more freedom to create their own content. Currently, in GTA Online, most new content comes from official releases and carefully chosen events, despite the existence of tools for players to be creative. Because Rockstar now owns FiveM, a well-known platform for player-made modifications, many fans hope the next game will be more welcoming to modding and player creativity.
Most people anticipate that games will continue to offer optional in-game purchases. Because GTA 6 is predicted to be incredibly popular, these purchases probably won’t stop players from buying and enjoying the game.
Everyone’s expecting Rockstar to announce a summer marketing push, and this could be when they finally share details about the future of their online game and when we can expect updates. Until then, keep an eye out for more hints and leaks as we get closer to summer.
