In Subnautica 2, many tools – including the Scanner, Wakemaker, and Habitat Builder – need Basic Battery cells to work. When you first make a tool, it’s fully charged, but using it drains the battery. Eventually, the battery will run out, and the tool won’t function until it’s recharged.
Instead of constantly making new tools when the old ones wear out, it’s much more efficient to recharge them. You can swap out used batteries for fresh ones, and then recharge the empties at a Battery Terminal. This way, you’ll save resources and never have to throw anything away!

How to Recharge Tools with Basic Batteries
Okay, so as a big fan of Subnautica 2, I’ve figured out how to keep all my tools running! Basically, you need to make sure you have fully charged Basic Batteries, and then load those into any tool that needs power. It’s pretty straightforward, but it’s essential to know!
- Place a fully charged Basic Battery in your inventory.
- Select the tool you want to recharge in the quick slots menu (hotbar).
- Press “R” to bring up the reload menu.
- Select the Basic Battery from the pop-up.
- Press the “Load” hotkey displayed on the screen to swap the empty battery with the fully charged one.
Insert the fully charged Basic Battery into the tool, and your used battery will go back into your inventory.
If you have more than one Basic Battery, you can switch between them. You’ll see how much charge each one has at the bottom of the selection screen.
How to Recharge Tools with Other Tools
If your Scanner or another important tool runs out of power while you’re exploring, and you don’t have a Basic Battery to recharge it, you can transfer power between tools instead. Here’s how to do it.
- Select a tool whose charge you want to take.
- Press “R” to bring up the Reload menu.
- Press the “Unload” hotkey displayed on the screen, and a Basic Battery will be deposited in your inventory.
- Use this Basic Battery to charge the tool you want to power.
The Tadpole uses Power Cells for energy instead of regular batteries. You can recharge these Power Cells at a Power Cell Terminal.

Battery Terminal Fragment Locations
As a big fan of Subnautica 2, I’m really glad they’ve included Battery Terminals in the base building! They’re super useful because if your batteries run low, you can charge up to six of them at once as long as your base is powered up. It’s a much faster way to keep all my equipment going!
You can unlock the Battery Terminal blueprint by finding and scanning two Battery Terminal Fragments. Luckily, both fragments are located in the Old Habitat, just 220 meters southeast of your Lifepod.
- Battery Terminal Fragment #1: Found on a wall directly underneath the Old Habitat signal.
- Battery Terminal Fragment #2: Found on the wall near the Quaker Blackbox (second floor).
How to Use the Battery Terminal
After you’ve learned the blueprint, you can craft a Battery Terminal at your base with these materials:
- Titanium x2
- Quartz x2
- Copper Wire x1
Once you’ve built a Battery Terminal in your base, just place any empty Basic Batteries inside. It will automatically recharge them as long as it has power. Basic Batteries charge very quickly – it only takes about a minute to fully recharge them from empty to full.
Each battery charging at the terminal uses 1 energy per second from the main power source. Therefore, charging six batteries simultaneously requires 6 energy per second, while charging just one only needs 1 energy per second.
