In Starfield, you can journey across the galaxy, visiting countless star systems and planets. You can get around in several ways, whether you’re following a specific goal or just exploring, and some methods feel more realistic and engaging than others.
As a big Starfield fan, I’ve been exploring all the new features with the Free Lanes update, and I wanted to share what I’ve learned about Cruise Mode. You can fast travel to get places quickly, but if you really want to feel like you’re traveling through space, Cruise Mode is the way to go! This guide will cover everything you need to know about it.
How to Unlock Cruise Mode in Starfield
You won’t be able to use Cruise Mode right away in Starfield. When you first get the Frontier ship after speaking with Barrett, the option to activate Cruise Mode won’t be available.
In Starfield, you won’t be able to use Cruise Mode until you’ve finished the game’s opening sequence. Specifically, you need to complete the “One Small Step” mission and join Constellation, then leave New Atlantis. Once you’re back piloting the Frontier after that, Cruise Mode will be unlocked.
How to Enter Cruise Mode in Starfield
Starfield’s Cruise Mode lets you enjoy a more realistic and immersive experience of space travel, eliminating instant teleporting between locations. To activate it, press LB on Xbox, L1 on PlayStation, or the ‘T’ key on PC while piloting your ship.
While in Cruise Mode, players can control their speed using the left analog stick (up to accelerate, down to slow down) on a controller, or by using the W and S keys on a PC. To boost, press down on the analog stick or hold down the Shift key.
Players can pilot their ship directly to a destination, or they can use Autopilot. To activate Autopilot, simply look at a nearby location, select it, and then press the corresponding button (RB on Xbox, R1 on PlayStation, or Spacebar on PC). While traveling, players can also leave their pilot seat in Cruise Mode and move around the ship.
Players can easily switch out of Cruise Mode when they’re nearing their goal, returning to normal controls to land or dock as usual.
