‘I Don’t Want To Touch That With a 10-Foot Pole’: Former Valve Writer Comments on Half-Life 3

Chet Faliszek, a former writer at Valve, has said he would strongly avoid working on Half-Life 3. Having previously written Half-Life 2: Episode One and Two, as well as the Portal and Left 4 Dead games, Faliszek admits he’s “terrified” by the pressure of having to meet fans’ expectations and the established story of the series.

For over twenty years, gamers have eagerly anticipated Half-Life 3. The first two Half-Life games are considered all-time classics, creating huge expectations for Valve and any potential sequel. While Valve hasn’t forgotten the series – as shown by the 2020 VR game Half-Life: Alyx – a proper third installment hasn’t materialized. It’s now been 22 years since Half-Life 2 was released, and fans are still waiting.

Former Half-Life Writer Would Not Touch HL3 ‘With a 10-Foot Pole

Responding to a fan on YouTube Shorts who suggested making Half-Life 3, Valve’s former writer Marc Faliszek explained why he avoids revisiting established game universes. The fan thought the story could go in any direction, building on previous games. However, Faliszek said he actively dislikes working with existing lore, even for games like Left 4 Dead. He prefers fresh starts, stating he doesn’t want to deal with fans correcting him on established details from the past. He simply doesn’t want to be told he’s changed something from decades ago.

Faliszek explained that he considered working on a Bungie game once, but was hesitant because of the sheer amount of backstory and established story details. He admitted he doesn’t enjoy working within such extensive universes, feeling overwhelmed by the existing lore. He believes sequels are inherently problematic and something he actively avoids. He was equally firm about Half-Life 3, stating he has no interest in being involved with it in any capacity, even jokingly suggesting he wouldn’t take the job if separated from it by a long pole—or even Dog’s robotic arms and a gravity gun.

There’s absolutely no way I’m getting involved with that. Not even if I could use some kind of device to keep my distance, or if someone else did it for me – I wouldn’t touch it under any circumstances.

It’s easy to see why Faliszek feels this way, and he wants to be clear: this isn’t a hint about a new Half-Life 3 or a sign that one’s coming soon. He’s just sharing his personal opinion. The hype around this potential game is huge – possibly bigger than for any other title – after twenty years of waiting. Even if Half-Life 3 does eventually come out, it’s difficult to imagine it could ever truly meet such massive expectations.

Despite ongoing speculation, there’s still no confirmation that Valve will ever release Half-Life 3. Recent rumors hinted at a possible announcement soon, but nothing has come of them. Valve’s latest full game release was Counter-Strike 2 in 2023, and they’re currently testing a new hero-shooter called Deadlock in a limited alpha phase.
