It’s Official: Bethesda Figured Out Yet Another Way to Re-Release Skyrim

Bethesda has found another way to release The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim to players. Originally launched in 2011, Skyrim was a revolutionary open-world game that received high praise and won many awards. Considered by many to be one of the greatest games of all time, Bethesda has repeatedly re-released Skyrim to keep its popularity alive.

Originally, Skyrim came out on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. In 2016, the Special Edition arrived on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, featuring improvements and all previously released downloadable content. The game continued to expand to new platforms, appearing on Nintendo Switch and in virtual reality in 2017. Amazingly, a version even launched for Amazon Alexa in 2018. More recently, the Anniversary Edition was released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2021, and a digital-only edition came to Nintendo Switch last year.

Skyrim Has a New Physical Release on Switch 2

There’s a new way to buy Skyrim on Switch 2. Bethesda has released a physical version of the game that includes a code to access the full content. Priced at $59.99, this package is the Anniversary Edition, meaning it features the original game, all three expansions, enhanced performance and graphics over the first Switch version, and hundreds of extra items from the Creation Club. Some fans may be disappointed it’s a code-in-a-box rather than a traditional game cartridge, and many might have preferred a Game Key Card, but it provides another option for those wanting to experience Skyrim.

Like Skyrim, Fallout 4 is now available in a physical, code-in-box release for the Nintendo Switch 2. Fallout 4 has been re-released several times since it first came out in 2015, and while it hasn’t been re-released as often as Skyrim, it’s notable how frequently Bethesda gives its popular games new releases.

There’s growing speculation that more Bethesda games might be released for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Rumors have circulated repeatedly about Starfield, the open-world sci-fi RPG, potentially coming to the new console, but Nintendo and Bethesda haven’t officially confirmed anything yet. If Starfield does arrive on Switch 2, it’s unclear whether it will be released as a downloadable code included in a physical box, or as a full game on a cartridge.
