LEGO is creating building sets based on the popular Donkey Kong video game series. This continues a trend of collaborations between LEGO and Nintendo, which have already produced sets for franchises like Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Super Mario. While some Donkey Kong-themed items have appeared within the Super Mario LEGO line, it looks like LEGO is planning a more extensive collection.
Donkey Kong first appeared in his own arcade game in 1981, where he played the villain. That game introduced players to Mario (originally known as “Jumpman”), who had to save Pauline from Donkey Kong. Over the years, Donkey Kong has evolved into more of a hero, and has gained a whole group of friends – including Diddy, Dixie, and Cranky – as well as enemies like the Tiki Tak Tribe and King K. Rool with his Kremlings.
LEGO’s Donkey Kong Plans
LEGO recently shared a brief video on Instagram hinting at a future Donkey Kong set. The video features a barrel rolling across the screen, decorated with designs from the original Donkey Kong arcade game. This suggests LEGO might be creating a set based on the classic game, similar to last year’s Game Boy set. While it’s just a guess, the barrel’s small size could mean the set will include smaller versions of Donkey Kong, Mario, and Pauline.

LEGO fans are eager to see what the company plans next with the Donkey Kong license. While a LEGO set modeled after the classic arcade game would fit with their current releases, there’s plenty of potential for more. LEGO could create sets featuring the breakable environments from Donkey Kong Bananza, King K. Rool’s pirate ship, or levels from Mario vs. Donkey Kong.
It’s logical that LEGO is increasing its focus on Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong Bananza has been a huge success on the Switch 2, selling over 4.5 million copies in under a year. This game was the first completely new Donkey Kong title in over ten years (excluding updated versions and re-releases), and it’s given the character the most attention since the popular Donkey Kong Country games on the SNES.

Donkey Kong’s future looks promising! The game Donkey Kong Bananza is still getting updates and support, and there’s even talk of a Donkey Kong movie. Seth Rogen, who voiced Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, has expressed interest in a spin-off film. While Illumination has another Nintendo movie planned for 2028, it’s currently unknown if it will feature Donkey Kong and his friends.
