May 21st was a mixed day for fans of Bungie’s Destiny 2. After a long period of quiet, Bungie announced that the game will receive one final major content update on June 9, 2026, effectively ending its live service. While the update promises a lot of new things, features players have been asking for, and significant changes, many fans are understandably upset that the game is nearing its end. Although Destiny 2 will remain playable after the update, there are currently no plans for future content, which has unfortunately led some fans to express their frustration with Bungie’s other project, Marathon.
Marathon Is Being Review Bombed By Destiny 2 Fans
After Bungie recently announced Marathon, the Steam page for the game has experienced a surge in negative reviews. While reviews had become fairly stable over the last two months, they’re now dropping again. Marathon initially faced negative reviews after its March release, but those focused on issues with gameplay and technical performance. This time, the reason is clear: many reviewers are upset about Bungie’s decision to make Marathon instead of continuing with Destiny 2 or creating Destiny 3. Many comments express concern that Destiny 2 was sidelined or cancelled to allow Marathon to be developed, and others are simply disappointed that development resources went to this new game instead.

Bungie has ambitious plans for the future of Marathon, now that it’s the studio’s main focus. In a detailed update, game director Joe Ziegler shared what the team has learned since the game launched, what they’re currently developing, and a preview of upcoming content for the next several seasons. Notably, Ziegler revealed that Season 2 will introduce two new Player vs. Environment (PvE) modes as experimental options. One will have a small amount of Player vs. Player (PvP) interaction, while the other will be a purely PvE experience.

As a long-time fan, I’m starting to get a little worried about Bungie’s future. They’ve said they’re working on some new games, but recent reports, especially from Jason Schreier, suggest things aren’t as stable as we’d hope. Apparently, a Destiny 3 isn’t happening right now, and there are going to be layoffs in June after the latest update drops. He also said they’re brainstorming new Destiny ideas, but nothing has been officially approved yet, which is definitely a bit concerning.
