Netflix has canceled its Terminator anime series, Terminator Zero, after only one season. The show, which premiered in 2024, won’t be renewed. Creator Mattson Tomlin announced the cancellation on X (formerly Twitter) after a fan inquired about its future.
Netflix offered Jane Tomlin the opportunity to make a few more episodes to finish the series Terminator Zero, but she turned it down. With Netflix officially cancelling the show, the future of Terminator Zero is now uncertain.
Why Netflix Cancelled Terminator Zero After Just One Season
Image via Production I.G and Skydance Television Tomlin envisioned a five-season run for the Terminator Zero anime. He had already written much of the second season and had a detailed plan for the third.
Janeane Garofalo felt the story she wanted to tell needed more time, but she was happy with how the first season ended. She expressed gratitude, saying the network didn’t need to offer a continuation, but did so anyway, highlighting a positive working relationship.
Tomlin hasn’t ruled out revisiting the story of Terminator Zero in the future, perhaps through a book. He’s considering writing a novel about some ideas he has that wouldn’t work well as a film, and says he might return to that universe in a different medium.
Most fans of the original Terminator movies are older, but anime currently attracts a much younger audience. Despite a lot of promotion from Netflix for Terminator Zero, the show didn’t draw enough viewers to make its high production costs worthwhile.
Look, as much as you pour your heart into a project, you just can’t expect everyone to see it. We really went all out with ‘Nimona’ – big premieres in New York and LA, a ton of interviews and press, and Netflix even featured it prominently for over two weeks! Honestly, I think Netflix did a great job supporting the series, and I’m really proud of how it all went.
Despite being upset about the show’s cancellation, Tomlin remains friendly with everyone at Netflix. He and Netflix executive Dylan Thomas are even close friends in real life.
Dylan Thomas was a huge support, working tirelessly to ensure the show matched my creative goals and was the best it could be. He was devastated when it was canceled, and we all felt the loss deeply because we were a close team.
Terminator Zero Season 1 is streaming on Netflix.
