The popular team-based game, Overwatch, recently shared the origin story of a new character named Sierra. It turns out her mother was the very first person tested in the program that created the soldiers Reaper and Soldier: 76. Sierra will be playable in Overwatch starting April 14th with the release of the Reign of Talon Season 2 update.
Blizzard started a fresh take on Overwatch with the launch of Reign of Talon Season 1, introducing five new playable characters, with plans to add one more each season. As Season 2 approaches, Blizzard has unveiled Sierra, also known as Hero 51, as the sixth new hero in Reign of Talon. Sierra is a damage-dealing character who uses a variety of abilities to control the battlefield. She can quickly move around with her Anchor Drone, deal heavy damage to groups with Tremor Charges, and target hard-to-reach enemies using the Tracking Shot feature of her Helix Rifle.
Sierra’s Mother Was the First Supersoldier in Overwatch
Sierra joins the world of Overwatch with Season 2 on April 14th. Before her arrival, Blizzard revealed her past in the comic “New Heights.” Sierra was raised by her mother, Kendra Woods, who trained her with intense drills and exercises disguised as games. Eventually, Sierra discovered these weren’t games at all – her mother was actually hiding from the government, and they were constantly moving to stay safe. Twelve years before the current events in Overwatch, Kendra mysteriously disappeared.
Sierra moved in with her father and worked her way up within Helix Security, the same organization that Pharah belongs to. She hoped to leverage her position to discover what happened to her mother. Details not included in the “New Heights” story revealed why her mother was in hiding: she was actually Soldier: 01, the original participant in the Soldier Enhancement Program.
The game Overwatch features a secret U.S. government program that attempted to create supersoldiers. Though the program was ultimately considered unsuccessful and was canceled, many people were used in experiments. Only two supersoldiers are known to have come from it: Jack Morrison, who later became Soldier: 76, and Gabriel Reyes, known as Reaper or Soldier: 24. When Sierra investigated her mother’s past, she discovered links to Overwatch and its connection to Morrison and Reyes. She agreed to join Overwatch if they would share everything they knew about the former commanders.
This conspiracy is more complex than we thought. In the cinematic trailer for the hero Sierra, she informs Sojourn that Talon has broken into the Naughton Vault at Watchpoint: Grand Mesa. Victoria Naughton was the leading doctor and scientist responsible for the Soldier Enhancement Program. This suggests the item Emre retrieved from Helix could be a serum or formula that Moira wants to use to create supersoldiers for Talon.
