Nintendo’s Online Store Is Getting a Name Change

Nintendo’s online store is getting a new name at the end of the month, signaling a fresh start for the shop. This isn’t the first time Nintendo has updated its online store – the current name is less than five years old.

In 2022, Nintendo changed the name of its online store to My Nintendo Store to better connect it with the My Nintendo rewards program. This program lets players earn Platinum Points by playing games on Nintendo Switch Online or on mobile devices. While Nintendo hasn’t said whether Platinum Points will be discontinued, players can anticipate a new name for the online store soon.

Nintendo’s Online Store Will Get a New Name at the End of the Month

The online Nintendo store is getting a simpler name! It will officially become just “Nintendo Store” on May 27th. Nintendo announced the change on its official Twitter accounts in Japan, the UK, and the US. They also confirmed that the store will continue to be the main place to buy new Switch 2 games, and how it works won’t be changing at all.

Nintendo hasn’t said why they decided to rename their online store, but it’s probably just to make things simpler. Most people online haven’t seemed to mind the change. This is just one of several recent updates from Nintendo. They’ve also announced a price increase for the upcoming Switch 2, which follows a trend of other gaming companies raising console prices. While the store name change isn’t a major announcement, it shows Nintendo is actively making a lot of changes at the moment.

It’s likely we’ll never know exactly why the name was changed, but the subtle update could suggest exciting things are coming this summer. Rumors about a remake of Ocarina of Time are already circulating, and we know Splatoon Raiders will be released in July. This seemingly small change might actually be Nintendo preparing to refresh its brand before announcing new games. It’s just a guess, but the timing is notable, as summer is often when big game announcements are made.

Even a seemingly minor update like a new online store name has people wondering what else Nintendo has planned for the rest of the year.
