In a tale as old as time, or perhaps just as old as bureaucracy, the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) has proven yet again that vigilance in the face of data security is so last year. A breach, which conveniently lasted a staggering 18 months, has exposed the personal information of countless taxpayers – though, don’t hold your breath for a full accounting of just how many are now in jeopardy.
The breach, which came to light just last December, took place between July 2024 and December 2025 – a nice, comfy window where suspicious activity was going on in the OTC’s online taxpayer portal. But, who could blame them for missing it? After all, how else would one spend 18 months without noticing unauthorized access to sensitive W-2 and 1099 files? In fact, it wasn’t until the final month of this epic “data slumber” that the breach was even acknowledged.
As a result, names and Social Security numbers were stolen, though, mysteriously, the OTC has not shared how many unlucky souls are now facing the uncertainty of identity theft. Was it a dozen? A thousand? Why spoil the fun of guessing?
But fear not, dear citizens, the OTC assures everyone that the agency’s “ongoing commitment to the privacy of information” is as strong as ever (well, maybe after a little wake-up call). They’ll review their security standards, which should be a fascinating exercise in hindsight.
“Information privacy and security are among the OTC’s highest priorities. The OTC’s response included completing an investigation, cooperating with the Internal Revenue Service (‘IRS’) to further its investigation so it can monitor fraudulent tax filing activity, and undertaking a comprehensive review of the accessed files to determine the individuals involved in the incident.”
And don’t worry, for those impacted, the OTC has graciously offered a full year of credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. So, at least taxpayers have that going for them-because nothing says “we’re sorry” like a 12-month credit watch!
