PlayStation Shuts Down Destruction AllStars Five Years Later

Sony has announced it’s shutting down Destruction AllStars, its online car combat game. The game is no longer available for purchase digitally, and online multiplayer is now disabled. Players can no longer buy or use in-game currency.

Good news for Destruction AllStars players: the single-player campaign will be playable offline until November 25th. After that date, only the Arcade Mode challenges will still work. Sony claims the game is being discontinued due to technical problems, but it seems more likely they’re ending support for a game that didn’t attract enough players. It’s hard to believe technical issues are the real problem when there’s no one playing online.

I remember when Destruction AllStars was first announced – it was supposed to be a big, $70 launch game for the PS5! But it got pushed back to 2021. Then, Sony surprised everyone by making it free for PlayStation Plus subscribers for a couple of months. After that, it was super cheap, only $20! Honestly, the reviews were pretty mixed, and it never really seemed to catch on with a lot of players. Sadly, even five years after launch, it doesn’t look like the player base has grown much.

This is another example of a live-service game from Sony that hasn’t succeeded. Sony began focusing more on these types of multiplayer games earlier in the current console generation, a strategy that proved controversial and the company is still trying to overcome.

PlayStation has had limited success with games designed for ongoing service, like Helldivers 2 and the recent Marathon. Because of this, they’ve reduced their plans for these types of games, quietly canceling several multiplayer projects from well-known studios, including a multiplayer game based on The Last of Us from Naughty Dog and a God of War project from Bluepoint. This also follows the failure of Concord, which serves as a warning to the entire gaming industry.

Players can still play Destruction AllStars’ solo content for a limited time before it’s removed permanently.
