Just over a day before its release on October 16th, *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* received update version 1.0.1. Although the update is a small download, The Pokemon Company confirmed that it’s required for players to access the game’s online features.
The upcoming game *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* will bring back Mega Evolution as a key battle feature and introduce a new battle system inspired by the *Xenoblade Chronicles* series. Players will revisit Lumiose City, originally seen in *Pokemon X and Y*. While the game isn’t out until October 16th, initial reviews have been generally favorable. Currently, *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* has a slightly higher score of 82 on OpenCritic compared to its competitor, *Digimon Story: Time Stranger*, which scored 80.
Players who pre-ordered *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* can now download it, but they’ll need to download a small update to use all of the game’s features. This update, version 1.0.1, was released on October 14th for both the Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2. The Pokemon Company says this update is essential for online play, like trading and battling. While the update itself doesn’t require a Nintendo Switch Online membership to download, you *will* need a membership to access the game’s online features.
As a Pokémon fan, I’m really excited about Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and I want to collect *all* the Mega Stones! It looks like to get the ones for Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja, I’ll need to jump into the game’s ranked Battle Club. It’s a free-for-all battle with up to three other players, and each match only lasts three minutes. The Mega Stones are the rewards for participating, but honestly, it’s still a mystery how many battles we’ll have to win (or just play!) to get them all.
The 1.0.1 update will add the data needed for online features in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A*, but the game won’t be compatible with *Pokémon Home* when it first releases. It’s currently unknown how frequently updates will be released after the game is available.
