A Pokemon fan created a chart detailing how long it takes players to complete the tutorial and catch their first Pokemon in each of the main series games. The chart lists the games in order of release, beginning with the original Pokemon Red and Blue and continuing up to the newest title, Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
Every main Pokemon game begins with the player as a new trainer who doesn’t have any Pokemon. After a brief tutorial, players can explore their starting town, though some games limit where they can go at first. In the original Pokemon Red and Blue, Professor Oak immediately guides players to his lab where they choose Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle as their first Pokemon. Later games give players both a starter Pokemon and Poke Balls to catch more Pokemon in the wild. While it’s possible to complete some Pokemon games without using any Poke Balls, it’s a very difficult challenge.
A Nifty Chart Shows How Long Pokemon’s Tutorials Can Take
A Pokemon fan decided to time how long it takes to catch your first wild Pokemon in each game. Content creator Xalem compiled a chart showing the time – in minutes and seconds – for almost every main series and spin-off Pokemon game. The fastest time was in Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee, at just 3 minutes and 36 seconds. Xalem calculated these times by watching all cutscenes and reading through mandatory text as quickly as possible. Considering how easy Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee are for new players, being able to catch a Pokemon so quickly after starting the game really highlights that accessibility.
According to Xalem’s research, other Pokémon games with quick tutorials include Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, and the original Pokémon Red and Blue. Xalem pointed out that Pokémon Legends: Arceus differed from most games in the series by requiring players to catch their starter Pokémon during the tutorial. However, starting with the seventh generation of Pokémon games, tutorials generally take over 20 minutes to complete. The longest tutorial on Xalem’s list was in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which took 28 minutes and 50 seconds before players could freely explore and catch Pokémon in the first Wild Zone.
I was crunching the numbers on how long it takes to get through the tutorials in most Pokemon games, and it turns out the average is about 13 minutes and 16.51 seconds. No single game hit that exact time, but Pokemon Platinum came the closest at 14 minutes and 47.96 seconds. It’s funny, because even though Platinum is often seen as the best of Generation 4, its tutorial is actually three minutes longer than the one in Diamond and Pearl!

Interestingly, Xalem’s list didn’t include Pokemon GO. As Pokemon Winds and Waves is being developed, it’s unclear how long it will take before players can start catching Pokemon from Generation 10, which is expected in 2027.
