On March 2nd, Netflix will no longer support the PlayStation 3, effectively ending an era for the 20-year-old console. Though few people still use a PS3 to watch Netflix, those who do will need to switch to another device in about a month. Netflix is now displaying a warning message to affected users.
Considering the PlayStation 3 is almost 20 years old, it’s remarkable that Netflix continued to support it for so long. The console remains popular with gamers who enjoy a bit of retro gaming. It’s the only way to play Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and it’s still the best way to experience some classic PlayStation exclusives like the original Uncharted games and Infamous 2. Plus, you can still enjoy older Call of Duty titles. Even Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 4 remains playable only on the PS3, Xbox through backwards compatibility, and PC, with fans still hoping for a version on newer consoles.
Netflix Is Ending Support for the PS3 Next Month
Many PlayStation 3 owners still enjoy the console, but Netflix will soon stop working on it. A Reddit user noticed that the Netflix app now warns PS3 users that support ends next month. Starting March 2, 2026, you won’t be able to stream Netflix on your PlayStation 3. Netflix provides a link to help users find devices that are still compatible with the service.
Back in 2009, when Netflix first launched on the PS3, you could only watch using a DVD they mailed to you. Xbox 360 users already had a Netflix app, but it took until 2010 for the app to arrive on the PlayStation 3. Considering how long ago that was, it’s surprising Netflix still supported the PS3 for so long! Luckily, if you’ve upgraded to a PS4 or PS5, you can still download the app and keep enjoying Netflix, as long as you have a current subscription.
Even though the PlayStation 3 is turning 20 this November, it still has a loyal following. In 2021, Sony tried to close the online store for PS3, PSP, and PS Vita, but reversed the decision after a strong reaction from gamers. Today, PS3 owners can still buy classic games and downloadable content. Jim Ryan, Sony’s former CEO, admitted they had “made a mistake” and recognized the passion of PS3 users who continued to use the store regularly.

Sony now makes it simple to play PlayStation 3 games on current consoles. With a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, you can access a growing library of classic titles on your PlayStation 5. While not every PS3 game is available, there’s a large selection to choose from. Keep in mind that these games aren’t downloaded – you stream them over the internet, so a good connection is needed for smooth gameplay. However, if you don’t have a PS3 anymore, it’s a fantastic way to enjoy those old favorites.
