With the release of Pokemon Champions, players are finally able to battle with some of the new Mega Evolutions from Pokemon Legends: Z-A. While not all of the new Mega Evolutions are available in Pokemon Champions yet, the ones that are are already influencing the competitive scene. Interestingly, one of these new forms has a surprisingly effective strategy that most players haven’t discovered.
Currently, the Mega Evolutions recently added from Pokemon Legends: Z-A that are available in Pokemon Champions are:

Currently, only 22 of the 45 Mega Evolutions introduced in Legends: Z-A are available in Pokemon Champions. Some of the strongest additions include Mega Froslass, which boasts the Snow Warning ability, and Mega Golurk with its Hidden Fist ability. Mega Starmie is also a powerful new option, thanks to its Huge Power ability, though it excels in ways many players might not expect.
Mega Starmie Has a Broken Strategy in Pokemon Champions
The Ability Huge Power is a major strength in the Pokemon games, instantly doubling a Pokemon’s Attack stat during battle. This has allowed Pokemon like Azumarill and Mega Mawile, which aren’t naturally very strong, to become serious threats. Now, Mega Starmie can also benefit from Huge Power in Pokemon Champions. When it Mega Evolves, its Attack stat jumps to an incredible 200, making it a powerful opponent.
Skill Swap Lets Mega Starmie Pass Huge Power to a Teammate
Mega Starmie is already a strong Pokémon thanks to its Huge Power ability, and many players use it that way in Pokémon Champions. However, it can also share that powerful attack boost with a teammate, creating an even more dangerous attacker. It does this with the move Skill Swap, which lets it trade abilities with another Pokémon. This allows Mega Starmie to either defeat opponents like Incineroar or Mega Charizard Y directly, or to pass on its Huge Power to a partner who can utilize it more effectively, depending on the situation.
This strategy works only in double battles in Pokémon Champions because Skill Swap can only target your teammate’s Pokémon in that format.

Mega Starmie works best when it uses Skill Swap to give a teammate with already high Attack an even bigger boost. Ideally, that partner should also be fast or capable of dealing a lot of damage. For players in Champions, here are some good Pokémon to pair with Mega Starmie to maximize this strategy of boosting a partner’s Attack with Skill Swap.

Garchomp is a strong contender for Huge Power because its naturally high Attack stat of 130 would double to 260. This makes its Earthquake attack even more powerful than a Mega Evolution, and it can potentially hit both opponents unless they are Flying-type Pokémon or have the Levitate ability. Arcanine also benefits greatly from Huge Power, boosting its Attack to 220. Plus, it can learn Extreme Speed, a fast-hitting move that ensures it often attacks first.
Tyranitar is another strong choice for using the Huge Power ability. While not as fast as Pokémon like Garchomp and Arcanine, Tyranitar boasts a higher Attack stat, reaching 264 when Huge Power is active. It can also use Rock Slide, a powerful Rock-type attack that damages both opponents and is particularly effective against Flying-type Pokémon, making it a good alternative to Garchomp’s Earthquake.

Beyond gaining Huge Power from Skill Swap, players should consider teammates to help protect Mega Starmie while it prepares its strategy. A strong starting pair for most Pokemon Champions teams is Corviknight and Incineroar. Incineroar’s Intimidate ability reduces the opponent’s Attack, and its Fake Out move can prevent them from setting up on the first turn. Corviknight can counter opposing Intimidate with its Mirror Armor ability and use Tailwind on the first turn to give the team a speed advantage. Incineroar can then use Parting Shot to switch out safely and bring in Mega Starmie.
Okay, so if I’m leading with Umbreon, it really sets things up nicely for my Mega Starmie’s Skill Swap strategy. Umbreon’s super bulky and can use Taunt, which stops opponents from using annoying status moves for a few turns. That gives Mega Starmie and its partner time to safely switch in and pull off Skill Swap with Huge Power without worrying about someone like a Follow Me user messing it up. Plus, Umbreon knows Yawn, so I can put Pokemon that would be trouble for Mega Starmie or my Skill Swap partner to sleep before I even bring them in. It’s a great way to control the field!
