BioWare has a strong history of creating memorable RPG companions, so it’s natural to have high expectations for the characters in Exodus. While not developed by BioWare directly, Exodus is being made by Archetype Entertainment – a studio founded by former BioWare developers who worked on beloved games like Baldur’s Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, and Dragon Age: Origins. Given this team’s experience, Exodus appears to be aiming to recapture the spirit of BioWare’s Mass Effect series, meaning its companions should be both engaging to get to know and valuable in battle.
The release of Exodus is probably over a year away, so details about its characters are still limited and mostly unknown. An extended gameplay reveal at the Future Games Show on June 6th might change that. Until then, it’s worth familiarizing yourself with the few companions that have been confirmed, even though there isn’t much information about them yet.
Meet Exodus’ Tom, Elise, and C.C. Orlev
The official website for the RPG Exodus lists 11 companions. Five of these companions will fight alongside the player, while the other six primarily serve the story. Although all 11 companions will likely be part of the player’s adventure, it seems the five ‘combat companions’ are the ones you’ll be able to take into battles. The remaining six will likely focus on the narrative, though players may still be able to interact with them similarly to the combat companions.
So far, we know about 2 of the 5 combat companions in Exodus: Tom Vargas and Elise Charroux. There’s only been confirmation of 1 story companion, C.C. Orlev. Right now, the game’s website only has short descriptions of these characters, but Archetype plans to share more details during the Future Games Show on June 6th, giving fans a better look at Exodus.
Tom Vargas and Elise Charroux Are Two of Exodus’ Combat Companions
Let’s talk about Tom Vargas, a confirmed companion in Exodus. The game’s website describes him as a former explorer who lost his wife and later found a new life as a skilled salvager on Lidon. He’s clever, adaptable, well-connected, and a survivor who’s learned from past hardships. If we compare him to characters from other BioWare games, he’s most similar to Carth Onasi from Knights of the Old Republic. Both characters are defined by the loss of their wives and the emotional weight that carries. Like Carth – a Republic soldier and pilot whose family was destroyed by the Sith – Tom seems like a fundamentally good person dealing with a painful past.
Elise Charroux is another confirmed combat companion in Exodus. She feels a lot like Zaeed Massani from Mass Effect 2 – a direct, experienced mercenary who’s more likely to protect you by taking the lead than by following orders. Like Jack from Mass Effect 2, she has a criminal past. But right now, she seems like the type of character BioWare used to create: tough, powerful, and someone who defines trust through action, not just words.
C.C. Orlev Is One of Exodus’ Story Companions
Many fans likely know C.C. Orlev best, as he’s voiced by Matthew McConaughey and has been heavily featured in the game’s advertising. Unlike Tom and Elise, C.C. is a story companion, suggesting he’s more focused on the narrative than gameplay itself. While much of his past remains a secret, what we’ve learned so far suggests he shares similarities with the character Flemeth from the Dragon Age series.
Flemeth is a well-known but mysterious character in BioWare games, often appearing at key moments with hidden intentions. C.C. Orlev shares this quality – everyone knows the stories about him, but no one knows his whereabouts or reasons for acting, and he shows up whenever the main character, Jun, is in desperate need. He also resembles the Illusive Man from Mass Effect in that he’s a helpful figure who is also somewhat untrustworthy.
Several Other Exodus Companions Have Been Confirmed, But Remain a Mystery
Besides Tom, Elise, and C.C., the Exodus website reveals eight more characters who will join the story. Four of these companions have been named, while the identities of the other four remain a mystery. Currently, none of these eight have detailed backgrounds or stories available, so we don’t know anything about their origins or motivations.
Exodus Other Confirmed Companions
- Salt the Octopus
- Phaedra
- Suliman
- Emrys
- Four Unnamed Story Companions
Currently, the game Exodus is only revealing its companions in small pieces, but even those glimpses tell us a lot. Tom, Elise, and C.C. Orlev each remind players of classic BioWare companions – like the one who’s lost everything, the tough mercenary, and the enigmatic figure with hidden knowledge. They aren’t direct copies, but the similarities are noticeable, especially since Exodus clearly draws a lot of inspiration from Mass Effect.
The key to Archetype’s success lies in whether it can create characters players genuinely connect with. BioWare’s most beloved companions weren’t strong fighters; they built meaningful, and often complicated, relationships with the player. If Exodus can achieve this with Tom, Elise, C.C., and the rest of its characters, its companions could prove this game is a true successor to Mass Effect, going beyond just imitating its style.
