I was really excited when Valve released the Steam Controller earlier this month, and most people seemed to like it! The biggest complaint I kept hearing, though, was that it was tough to use with games outside of Steam. Luckily, Valve listened! They just released an update that adds support for SDL, which should make the controller work with a lot more games and platforms. That’s awesome news for anyone who wants to use it beyond the Steam ecosystem.
Valve recently updated the Steam Controller, according to Phoronix, to work with SDL – a widely used system that allows many games and applications to recognize controller input. This update, along with a new mapping system, aims to make the Steam Controller function more like a regular gamepad.
While the recent update is a step forward, it’s not without issues. Many users are happy the Steam Controller now works reliably without Steam needing to run in the background, and most buttons are functioning correctly. However, launching Steam while another application using SDL is running can sometimes cause controls to register twice. Some users have also noted that the touchpad isn’t always responsive.
So, as far as the Steam Controller goes, this is probably it for now. It’s cool that it supports SDL, which means I might even be able to use it with games on other platforms without needing Steam. Hopefully, Valve will push out some more updates soon to fix any remaining issues and make everything run a little smoother.
Still no release date or price has been announced for the Steam Machine. Valve says they’ll share details before the year ends, and the device is still planned to launch in 2026. However, recent reports suggest Valve is struggling to decide how much to charge. They’re considering selling the Steam Machine at a loss to keep the price reasonable for customers.
