Horror is a key part of most creative works, and zombies are often used to create truly scary and memorable experiences. Interestingly, zombies aren’t limited to horror; they can even appear in romantic or funny stories. This versatility makes them a great fit for video games.
This year has seen a lot of updated versions of older games and ports, especially among major releases. But looking ahead to 2025, there are several new zombie games planned, offering a variety of different ways to play. Here’s a look at some of them.

Masters of Albion
A 2026 Open-World God Game With Zombies (And Other Monsters)
While not a traditional zombie game, Masters of Albion features the undead as just one element in a very large and ambitious world. Created by 22cans and Peter Molyneux – known for games like Black & White and Fable – Masters of Albion combines the elements of a ‘God Game’ with open-world exploration. Players will start by building and managing a town as a god, then be able to directly control characters and explore the world of Albion. The game will include quests, character upgrades, and opportunities to find treasure.
Zombies appear at night, joining the monsters that attack your towns. You can then control heroes to battle them directly, or use your godly powers to strike them down from above. Masters of Albion has a really promising concept, and we hope the final game lives up to its potential.
Stupid Never Dies
Best Upcoming Game For Those Who Want To Be The Zombie
One of the biggest surprises from The Game Awards was the reveal of Stupid Never Dies. What makes this zombie game different? For starters, the title is fantastic! More importantly, you play as a zombie. While a few games have experimented with zombie protagonists, this one is unique: it’s set in a monster-filled dungeon where zombies are actually the weakest creatures. You play as Davy, a zombie who mostly tries to avoid trouble, but when a human girl is frozen, he embarks on a grand action RPG adventure to save her.
Okay, I’m already hooked by the idea of Stupid Never Dies! From what I’ve seen in the trailers and screenshots, it looks like it’s going to be a really fast-paced, action-packed hack-and-slash game. The Steam page says you can actually steal abilities from the enemies you defeat, which is awesome, and you can even customize the bodies of your fallen foes! We don’t know a ton about it yet, but honestly, I’m getting a really good feeling that this could be one of the best surprises of 2026!
Beautiful Light
PvPvPvE Extraction Shooter That Let’s You Be The Monster
Have you ever found a game that seems almost too good to be true? Steam has plenty of them, and while it’s easy to get excited, it’s smart to stay realistic until the game is actually released. Beautiful Light could appeal to fans of two popular genres: extraction shooters and asymmetrical multiplayer games. There aren’t many truly great games in either of these genres, so a game that combines the best of both could be a big hit. Beautiful Light is aiming to do just that, and it’s impressive how ambitious it is.
Beautiful Light is a multiplayer game where players take on the role of soldiers completing objectives in a dangerous zone. They’ll face off against both rival players and AI-controlled monsters – including zombies. What makes it unique is that some of these monsters are actually controlled by other players, similar to games like Dead by Daylight or Evolve. This could create a really exciting and unpredictable multiplayer experience, but we’ll need to see how it plays out. Another key difference from many similar games is that Beautiful Light focuses on completing missions and character progression instead of just collecting loot, which means players might not lose their progress even after reaching the highest levels.

Nakwon: Lost Paradise
A Zombie Extraction Survival Game
From the creators of The First Descendant and other team-based games comes Nakwon: Last Paradise, a new take on the extraction genre with a zombie twist. The game is set in a ruined South Korean city overrun by zombies, where players venture out from safety to scavenge for supplies, knowing each trip will be a dangerous fight for survival. Gameplay footage shows Nakwon as a third-person survival game focusing on close-quarters combat and stealth, allowing players to avoid enemies and stay hidden.
Like most games where you collect items while surviving, Nakwon features both player-versus-player and player-versus-environment challenges, meaning you’ll face threats from both zombies and other players. Nexon, the game’s developer, has a somewhat inconsistent track record, but they’ve created some excellent titles. Nakwon is joining a genre already filled with similar games, and another zombie extraction shooter, The Midnight Walkers, was released just last January. However, its shift to a third-person perspective and potentially slower gameplay might help Nakwon stand out.
Graveyard Keeper 2
The Cemetery Beckons
Let’s switch gears now. Most upcoming zombie games focus on horror or shooting, often taking place in run-down, modern-day settings. But, as games like Stupid Never Dies prove, zombie games can also be bright, funny, and delightfully absurd – and Graveyard Keeper is a perfect example. Soon, you’ll be heading back to medieval times to manage a cemetery, but this time you’ll play as the Grand Inquisitor, giving you even more control and duties.
Just like the first game, Graveyard Keeper 2 is a darkly humorous management simulator where you run a graveyard instead of a farm, dealing with bodies instead of crops. The kingdom is facing a zombie outbreak, and most towns are struggling to cope. But you have what it takes to build, grow, succeed, and protect yourself—and that includes building your own zombie army!
Projekt Z: Beyond Order
Exciting In-Development Co-Op Zombie First-Person Shooter
It’s hard to believe Projekt Z, a World War II zombie shooter, will be out anytime soon, but the trailers have really stood out. The game creates a captivating and slightly scary atmosphere within the familiar zombie genre, and it looks stunning with its impressive lighting and textures.
314 Arts is a small, new game development studio from Germany with just nine people. They’re creating a zombie game where players can play alone or with friends online, and the story revolves around discovering hidden Nazi secrets on an island.
Showa American Story
A Zombie Game For People Who Want Action
A new zombie game called Showa American Story is generating some buzz. It comes from the creators of the controversial Dying: Reborn. The game presents a unique setting: a future where Japan has largely taken over the United States. This premise alone is intriguing, but the developers have added a post-apocalyptic twist. Players will experience this world through the eyes of a female protagonist who mysteriously awakens as a zombie with no memory of the events that led to the apocalypse.
Based on what we’ve seen, Showa American Story appears to be an action RPG where you’ll fight with both guns and quick melee attacks, similar to the Onechanbara series. Since the developer, Nekcom, is a smaller studio, it’s best to go in with reasonable expectations. The game seems to be aiming for a campy, B-movie feel, possibly with humor like you’d find in the Yakuza games. That sounds like it could be a really enjoyable and lighthearted experience.
Holstin
An Upcoming Zombie Game That Blends 2D And 3D
Zombie games, whether they’re team-based shooters or sprawling survival adventures, often start to feel very similar, especially the big titles. But Holstin stands out – you can immediately tell it’s different just by looking at it.
Pixel art is popular among independent game developers, so the choice of this style doesn’t make Holstin stand out initially. However, the quality of the execution is what truly counts, and Sonka has delivered stunning isometric graphics with the added benefit of 3D support. Players can switch between these two perspectives – a broad overview ideal for solving puzzles and a closer, third-person view for shooting.
The game takes place in a Polish town in the 1990s that’s facing a grim crisis, both in terms of a literal darkness and a growing sense of dread. Some of the townspeople have become monstrous zombies, while others are slowly losing their humanity. Holstin appears to draw inspiration from classic survival horror games, featuring elements like searching for supplies, scarce ammunition, a fragile main character, and challenging puzzles.

ILL
A Realistic First-Person Horror Game That Looks Incredible And Terrifying
Zombies just aren’t as frightening as they used to be. They’ve become predictable enemies, and game developers need to find new ways to make them truly scary again. Based on what we’ve seen, ILL looks like it could be the most terrifying zombie game coming out soon. It mixes classic zombies with some really imaginative and frightening creatures. I’m craving a game that’s so intense it makes me think twice before starting it – it’s been a long time since a game genuinely scared me, and I’m hoping this will be it. Of all the games mentioned, ILL seems like the only one with the potential to deliver that experience.
The game’s Steam page promises a realistic and terrifying experience with gruesome visuals, challenging enemies, a variety of weapons, puzzles, and careful resource management. The gameplay footage looks incredibly polished and fluid. While it’s wise to be cautiously optimistic, it’s also okay to get excited about it!
