It’s possible we won’t see much more about Pokemon Winds and Waves until its 2027 release, but some interesting details have recently leaked. One leak appears to show the entire game map, including the different islands and the ocean areas players will be able to explore underwater. The game seems to be following a similar formula to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, with diverse environments and challenges like Gym battles, potentially giving players a lot of freedom to explore the world as they please.

We don’t yet know all the details about the new islands, like what new Pokémon will appear, the types of challenges players will face, or if there will be powerful boss battles similar to the ‘Titan Pokémon’ from the most recent games. However, we can already compare the strengths of the new starters against the Gyms shown in leaked maps, and it looks like one of them will likely be weaker than the others. A Pokémon’s power depends on its stats, abilities, and moves, but also its type. Based on early information, it seems Browt will be the least effective of the three starters.

It’s still uncertain if the game will adjust to your level or if Gyms must be challenged in a specific order. However, even with those unknowns, Pombon is definitely the strongest starter Pokémon for tackling these challenges, and Browt is the weakest. Here’s why:

    • Browt is a Grass-type Pokemon, meaning the first Gym resists its STAB attacks. Pombon is a Fire Pokemon, so it takes less damage from this Gym and deals more damage, too. Gecqua deals less damage to Grass Pokemon and also takes double the damage from them due to its Water type.
  • Poison Gym – Best Pokemon: Pombon and Gecqua
    • Browt is weak to Poison and also deals reduced damage to it with Grass moves. Pombon is neutral against Poison both offensively and defensively, and so is Gecqua.
  • Flying Gym – Best Pokemon: Pombon and Gecqua
    • Browt is weak to Flying, and deals reduced damage to it with STAB moves. Both Pombon and Gecqua are neutral against Flying.
  • Fighting Gym – Best Pokemon: All Starters Equally
    • All three starters are neutral both offensively and defensively against Fighting-type moves.
  • Dark Gym – Best Pokemon: All Starters Equally

Why Pombon is the Best Starter in Gen 10

Pombon might be a brand new type of Pokémon – the first Fire/Fairy combination! If true, this could shift some battle strategies. It would struggle against Poison-type Pokémon, but be strong against Fighting and Dark types. It would no longer resist Steel attacks, only be normally affected by them, though its Fire moves would still be very effective. It’s important to note that this is based on how Pombon looks, not confirmed information, so it’s just a guess for now.

Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Leaked Map Makes Browt the Worst Starter

If the recently leaked map is accurate, Browt appears to be the weakest starter Pokémon for navigating the gyms in Pokemon Winds and Waves. While Pombon has a clear advantage over three gyms that the other starters don’t, and performs well against all the rest, Browt faces the opposite problem. It’s likely to be the least effective starter in the new generation, especially early on, as it will struggle against the first three gyms and won’t have a type advantage against any of the others – including the Steel-type gym.

Grass-type Pokémon tend to be weak defensively, so Browt’s potential relies heavily on its future evolutions.
