A player of the game Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream found a clever way to include wheelchairs, despite the game lacking accessibility options. While the game allows extensive customization of characters, it doesn’t offer items to represent people with disabilities.
Released last April, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream quickly became a hit with players around the world thanks to its funny characters and engaging stories. The game lets you create and personalize your own Miis, designing everything from their appearance to their personality. You can even use detailed tools like Face Paint to add unique features, and choose non-binary options and romantic preferences for your characters. This level of creative control likely contributed to the game selling over 3.8 million copies worldwide in just the first two weeks!
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Player Creates a Wheelchair Dress
Although the game Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream lets players customize their Mii characters in many ways, it lacks options for representing disabilities. To address this, a Reddit user named Appropriate-Heart632 designed a wheelchair-themed dress for their Mii. They shared photos of a female Mii wearing the dress, which features a painted-on body and wheelchair, creating the appearance of someone sitting and moving in a chair. The user explained that the Mii was modeled after a friend who uses a wheelchair, and they wanted the avatar to accurately reflect her.

It’s currently unclear whether Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will soon include wheelchairs or other mobility aids for Miis. Adding these features would require the developers to create entirely new animations, which would take considerable time. Nintendo hasn’t committed to this yet. Right now, the development team seems to be prioritizing optimizing the game and fixing any major bugs before considering additional features like these.

The new game, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, is proving far more successful than its predecessor, which was released 13 years ago on the Nintendo 3DS. Players are having fun creating characters inspired by games like Overwatch using the Mii Maker, and are captivated by the lives and relationships of their Mii characters – including all the ups and downs. The game has quickly become popular, especially on social media, and it will be interesting to see how Nintendo maintains this momentum going forward.
