Warhorse Confirms its Working on Open World Lord of the Rings RPG

Warhorse Studios, the creators of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, recently confirmed they are developing an open-world role-playing game based on The Lord of the Rings. This was revealed after the studio responded to speculation and confirmed the new project alongside plans for another adventure in the Kingdom Come universe.

Warhorse Studios announced on X that they’re developing two new games. One is the highly anticipated open-world RPG set in Middle-earth. The other is a new game in the Kingdom Come universe, possibly a spin-off or a sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Warhorse says they’ll share more details when they’re ready.

It’s unclear how much progress Warhorse has made on these games, but considering the size and scope of their projects, it will likely be several more years before we see or hear anything about them.

When asked about using artificial intelligence in their games, Warhorse Studios replied:

As a big fan, I was really happy to hear the developers say they don’t see AI replacing the amazing work their team does! They’re actually growing the company, and that includes expanding the translation team, which is fantastic. Some translators are finding AI helpful for getting started with things, but the team is firm on not using AI-generated content in the final game, and they don’t plan to ever start. That’s a huge relief – it’s clear they value the human touch and quality in their work, and I really appreciate that!

The use of AI in game development is a sensitive topic, with many studios quietly exploring it. Warhorse Studios is being upfront about its AI use, however, and has pledged that no AI-created assets will appear in their final game. This is notable because even a highly-rated game like last year’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 accidentally included a piece of placeholder content created by AI, showing how easily such things can slip through. It remains to be seen if Warhorse Studios can keep its promise.
