Xbox Just Announced the Wrong New Achievement Feature

Xbox recently launched a new Gamerscore feature, but many players will be frustrated to learn it doesn’t include a long-requested element – something fans have wanted since 2008. While the new system is a cool way to display Gamerscore progress, it doesn’t quite match the prestige of a platinum trophy.

Xbox achievements debuted in 2005 with the Xbox 360, and the Gamerscore system quickly changed how people played games. It became so popular that other companies like Valve, Sony, and Apple added similar achievement systems to their platforms. Sony’s Platinum Trophy, earned by collecting all trophies in a game, is particularly sought after by players. While Xbox does track when a game is fully completed, it doesn’t give a specific achievement for it, and that completion status can even be reset if new achievements are added to the game later.

Xbox’s Gamerscore Badges Are Nice, but Fans Really Want Just One Thing

Xbox has updated its achievement system with a new way to show off your Gamerscore. Players now earn badges as they reach different Gamerscore milestones. These badges start appearing at a few thousand Gamerscore and become more elaborate as you earn more, with the highest-level badge awarded at 10 million Gamerscore – a feat no one has yet accomplished, though a handful of players are close with over 8.5 million! Currently, the badges max out at 10 million, which Xbox doesn’t anticipate needing to change anytime soon. Xbox Insiders can already add these new badges to their profiles.

This Xbox Insider update includes a new look when you start up your console, with a fresh animation and sound featuring the updated Xbox logo. There’s also a new “Game Access” filter that helps you easily see which games you own, which have been shared with you, and which are currently installed. This will be especially useful if you have games installed that are no longer part of Xbox Game Pass.

Just a month after updating the look of achievements, Xbox has released another patch, though some players might still find it lacking. Many gamers appreciate the PlayStation’s platinum trophy system, and Xbox fans have been requesting a similar feature for a while. Currently, the Xbox achievement system can be frustrating: players who earn 100% completion in a game may have that progress invalidated when new achievements are added with post-launch downloadable content. Unlike Xbox, PlayStation’s platinum trophies aren’t affected by these updates. Ironically, even games published by Xbox on the PlayStation 5 do feature platinum trophies.

Xbox players have been hoping for a way to truly showcase completing a game, and currently, that doesn’t exist. However, the recent update to the Gamerscore system is still a welcome addition. Ultimately, things like trophies, Gamerscore, and achievements are mostly about showing off dedication and earning bragging rights. If that’s the case, it’s great to have more ways to display accomplishments to friends and other players.
