6 Pokemon That Are Weaker in the Manga

Many Pokémon maintain consistent abilities and powers across different media like video games, the animated series, and comics. They often share the same moves and are typically paired with skilled Trainers who help them reach their full potential. However, not all Pokémon receive this consistent portrayal.

Certain Pokémon appear significantly more powerful in the anime than they do in the manga. While characters differ in the manga series, Pokémon Adventures, Pokémon should generally have consistent abilities across all versions of the story. However, a handful of these Pokémon specifically seem much less capable in the manga.

Raticate

A Strong Early Team Pokemon That Never Stood Out

Rattata is a common Pokémon found at the very beginning of the Kanto region, and it eventually evolves into Raticate. While it’s not a particularly powerful Pokémon, it’s a helpful addition to a new Trainer’s team and can easily win early battles. In the animated series, Raticate is shown as a quick and fierce fighter capable of holding its own, even against tougher opponents.

In the manga, Raticate is largely ignored and easily defeated, serving only as a minor obstacle for new trainers. While the anime doesn’t showcase Raticate as exceptionally strong, it at least allows the Pokémon opportunities to demonstrate its usefulness as a starting Pokémon, something the manga doesn’t offer.

Rhydon

This Classic Pokemon Doesn’t Have a Great Track Record in the Manga

Rhydon is a really imposing Pokémon, mainly due to its huge size. The anime often shows Rhydon as incredibly strong and physically powerful, and its sheer size makes it feel like a serious threat. While it isn’t the absolute strongest Pokémon out there, it’s still a valuable asset for any trainer.

In the manga, Rhydon doesn’t feel quite as powerful as it does in the anime. It’s often used by Team Rocket as a tough bodyguard, but surprisingly, it’s frequently beaten by trainers who rely on smart tactics rather than just raw strength, like Red.

Arbok

A Pokemon That Completely Loses Its Bite in the Manga

Arbok is a Pokémon frequently used by Team Rocket in the anime series. Even though Team Rocket often loses to Ash and his friends, Arbok consistently puts up a good fight and can be a scary opponent. It’s known for being tough and doesn’t give up easily in battle.

Despite being a strong Pokémon, Arbok isn’t a major player in the Pokémon Adventures manga. It rarely gets to battle or demonstrate its power, making it a somewhat overlooked character. While Arbok looks intimidating, it’s often on the sidelines and doesn’t have many wins.

Machamp

This Physical Fighting-type Doesn’t Live Up to Its Reputation

Machamp is famous for its incredible strength and fighting ability, particularly thanks to its many arms. In the animated series, it’s shown as a powerful and imposing figure that can easily defeat others with its size. Machamp really shines in hand-to-hand combat, delivering a quick and overwhelming series of punches to quickly defeat its opponents.

Despite being strong and physically imposing, Machamp in the manga is frequently beaten by Pokémon that use clever tactics. Opponents often manage to outthink and overcome Machamp, making it hard for him to land a single blow. While still powerful in Pokemon Adventures, Machamp isn’t as effective in battles that require strategy.

Onix

The Giant Rock/Ground-Type Pokemon Lacks the Impact

Onix is a particularly striking Pokémon in the anime, largely because of its huge size and intimidating appearance. When Ash first encountered Onix in the wild, Pikachu was easily defeated, and Ash struggled significantly to win the battle. Onix has also appeared as a challenging boss Pokémon, and is famously part of Brock’s team during gym battles.

As a huge Pokémon fan, I’ve always found Onix a bit… frustrating in the manga! Like a lot of Pokémon there, it just doesn’t seem to think much. It relies on being big and tough, but a clever Trainer can really exploit that. Opponents can easily dodge its attacks and predict what it’s going to do next, which means all that size and defense don’t really help it. Honestly, it feels like Onix doesn’t live up to its potential in the manga version!

Pidgeot

A Major Member of Ash’s Team Isn’t As Good in the Manga

Pidgeot was one of the first main Pokémon on Ash’s team in the anime, fighting alongside him in many of his early adventures. It’s a significant character emotionally, and consistently demonstrates its strength, often surprising opponents with its reliability and courage. Though not the strongest Pokémon overall, Pidgeot is always a brave and dependable ally to Ash.

Pidgeot doesn’t play a significant role in the manga and makes few appearances. Consequently, it’s rarely involved in important battles and isn’t a particularly effective Flying-type Pokémon. Many Pokémon in the manga are skilled at defending against Flying attacks and use clever strategies to win. Pidgeot is much stronger and more capable in the anime, but it doesn’t get the chance to demonstrate its full potential in Pokemon Adventures.
