A week following the reveal of new artwork for beloved characters like Zidane, Square Enix expanded the cast with additional character sketches featuring Freya, Eiko, Quina, and Amarant in Final Fantasy 9. The game’s 25th anniversary update included these fresh character art designs, reigniting fan excitement about the possibility of a long-awaited remake.
First debuted in 2000, “Final Fantasy 9” served as a poignant farewell symphony for the original PlayStation console. This four-disc journey harkened back to the medieval foundations of the “Final Fantasy” series, offering vibrant settings and charming characters. In late March, Square Enix commenced the “Final Fantasy 9” 25th Anniversary festivities by showcasing a variety of merchandise such as vinyl albums and a mug inspired by the character Vivi. Additionally, “Final Fantasy 9” is set to appear in the upcoming “Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy” expansion pack, which will include cards depicting characters and iconic moments from the long-running “Final Fantasy” franchise’s history.
A week since the unveiling of new artwork for characters like Zidane and Garnet from Final Fantasy 9, Square Enix has rounded up the roster by releasing additional character art in celebration of the game’s 25th anniversary. As noted by Audrey Lamsam, CEO of Aitai Japan, on Twitter, the updated Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary site showcases new artwork featuring Freya Crescent, Eiko Carol, Quina Quen, and Amarant Coral. In our party, each character embodies a distinct Job archetype: Freya soars as a Dragoon, while Quina’s abilities are a unique form of Blue Magic.
Final Fantasy 9 Anniversary Artwork Now Includes Freya, Eiko, Quina, and Amarant
Just as with our last website update, every piece of the latest character art was created by none other than Toshiyuki Itahana, the original character designer from ‘Final Fantasy 9’. The new artwork showcases Freya and Quina in combat positions, each brandishing their distinctive weapons. Eiko is portrayed playing her flute next to a moogle, while Amarant is depicted looking off into the distance with an intense gaze.
The unveiling of the new character designs for Final Fantasy 9 occurred with only eight days left until Summer Game Fest, an event where Square Enix is one of the primary collaborators. While whispers about a potential remake of Final Fantasy 9 have lingered since the Nvidia GeForce Now leaks in 2021, the proximity of the new artwork to Summer Game Fest has sparked speculation among fans on social media.
Amidst the excitement of the 25th anniversary celebrations for Final Fantasy 9 and rumors about future releases of the series on Xbox consoles, fans are eagerly waiting to learn more. We’ll have to wait and see what Square Enix will reveal at Summer Game Fest regarding the Future of Final Fantasy.
