This Summer 2025 Anime Might Already Be As Popular As Solo Leveling

In the Summer of 2025, the anime season promises several blockbusters, with notable comebacks like “Dandadan Season 2” standing out. However, amidst numerous anime adaptations from “Shonen Jump” series, a fresh newcomer is gradually garnering attention that may have slipped under fans’ radar in recent months: “Tougen Anki“.

The narrative centers on Shiki Ichinose, a young individual who unexpectedly encounters an assassin one day, revealing that he’s actually an Oni with a foster father, Momotaro, who once hunted Onis. Following his father’s demise, Shiki finds himself thrust into a centuries-old struggle between Onis and Momotaros.

Tougen Anki Streaming Almost Everywhere

Tougen Anki” is a manga penned by Yura Urushibara, published as serialization in Akita Shoten’s “Weekly Shonen Champion” magazine, with a total of 25 volumes out so far. The anime version is being produced by Studio Hibari (known for “High Card”), which also manages Studio Lerche (famous for “Classroom of the Elite”). This is Ato Nonaka’s directorial debut in the anime world, having previously worked on “My Hero Academia” and “Kengan Ashura”. Yukie Sugiwara, the lead writer of Overlord IV, oversees the scripts and series composition.

A long time ago, there existed monstrous beings known as Oni that feasted on humans. However, a brave hero named Momotaro managed to vanquish them. Yet, their conflict seems to persist even in modern times.

Despite Tougen Anki not being a Shonen Jump series, it didn’t garner much pre-release attention due to its talented main crew and cast, including Hiroshi Kamiya (Levi from Attack on Titan) lending his voice to one of the characters. However, what really piqued fans’ interest before its release was the wide range of streaming services airing the series, with Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Netflix, and numerous international platforms offering it. For Tougen Anki fans, locating the series for viewing is hardly an issue, as it seems unusual for them to resort to unlicensed platforms given its widespread legality across various platforms.

Tougen Anki Is Trending on Netflix

It’s not common for Crunchyroll or Prime Video to frequently reveal their top-viewed shows. In contrast, Netflix updates a site weekly with their most popular series, and this week, Tougen Anki is included in their global rankings.

Despite being based on data from a single streaming platform, the fact that it’s popular on Netflix indicates a promising future for the series and suggests it could endure as a long-term success. For example, “Sakamoto Days Season 2,” an anime adaptation of a renowned “Shonen Jump” title exclusive to Netflix, is not yet included in these rankings. Furthermore, given that Netflix boasts the highest number of subscribers globally, achieving top viewership status is truly commendable.

Would Solo Leveling Fans Enjoy Tougen Anki?

Alongside catching up on Netflix’s lineup, the series “Tougen Anki” also holds a strong possibility of appealing to fans of “Solo Leveling.” Although they are separate shows, “Tougen Anki” carries some similar undertones reminiscent of “Demon Slayer.” This isn’t intended to create a rift among the fanbase and make them choose one over the other. Instead, those who appreciate the style of “Solo Leveling” may find it interesting to explore “Tougen Anki.

Regrettably, Tougen Anki isn’t currently offered for English readers. Japanese speakers can purchase the original books (digitally or physically) or even keep up with the latest chapters by reading Weekly Shonen Champion or the available chapters on Manga Cross. However, if the anime does well this season, there’s a strong possibility that it will soon be translated into English for our enjoyment.
