It’s Official: Say Hello to Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s New Mega Darkrai and Heatran

With the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A just a week away, dataminers have begun exploring the game’s code now that pre-load files are available. Unlike typical leaks which can be unreliable, datamining is usually very accurate. Recent datamining efforts, following a previous leak suggesting 26 new Mega Evolutions, have confirmed data for Mega Zeraora, Mega Darkrai, and Mega Heatran are all present in the game. This confirmation comes from Kaphotics, a trusted dataminer known for accurate information about Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Zeraora and Darkrai are Mythical Pokemon, whereas Heatran is a Legendary from Gen 4.

Early information about the game suggested there would be a total of 26 Mega Evolutions. Importantly, these were expected to exclude Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, with the exception of Mega Zygarde, which is fitting since Zygarde is the featured Pokémon in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A*. Here’s a list of those predicted evolutions:

  • Clefable (Fairy/Flying)
  • Victreebel (Grass/Poison)
  • Starmie (Water/Psychic)
  • Dragonite (Dragon/Flying)
  • Meganium (Grass/Fairy)
  • Feraligatr (Water/Dragon)
  • Skarmory (Steel/Flying)
  • Froslass (Ice/Ghost)
  • Emboar (Fire/Fighting)
  • Excadrill (Ground/Steel)
  • Scolipede (Bug/Poison)
  • Scrafty (Dark/Fighting)
  • Eelektross (Electric)
  • Chandelure (Fire/Ghost)
  • Chesnaught (Grass/Fighting)
  • Delphox (Fire/Psychic)
  • Greninja (Water/Dark)
  • Pyroar (Fire/Normal)
  • Malamar (Dark/Psychic)
  • Barbaracle (Rock/Fighting)
  • Dragalge (Poison/Dragon)
  • Hawlucha (Fighting/Flying)
  • Floette (Fairy)
  • Zygarde (Dragon/Ground)
  • Drampa (Normal/Dragon)
  • Falinks (Fighting)

So far, only seven Mega Evolutions have been officially confirmed: Mega Victreebel, Dragonite, Chesnaught, Delphox, Greninja, Malamar, and Hawlucha. These match earlier leaks, so their inclusion seems certain. Surprisingly, leaks didn’t mention Mega Evolutions for Darkrai and Heatran, but recent data discovered by Kaphotics confirms they *will* be in the game.

3 New Pokemon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolutions Are Already Clear

A data miner, Kaphotics, discovered files within *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* related to Mega Stones for Heatran, Darkrai, and Zeraora. This suggests these items are intended for player use. While the discovery hints at the possibility of Mega Evolutions for these three Legendary and Mythical Pokemon, it’s currently unknown if that will actually happen in the game.

Players might encounter these Pokémon after the game’s release, either naturally within the game, through special events, or in the downloadable content. With the *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* DLC already announced and available for pre-order – and its trailer showcasing several Mega Stones, including those for Mega Raichu X and Y – it’s likely these three Pokémon will gain their Mega Evolution abilities within that DLC.

How Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Heatran, Darkrai, and Zeraora Could Change

Zeraora’s inclusion was revealed some time ago, but Heatran and Darkrai are surprises, and we don’t yet know if their types or designs will be different. Heatran is very likely to remain a Fire and Steel type, as it’s currently the only Pokémon with that combination. Given that *Pokémon Scarlet and Violet* introduced Electric/Fighting Pokémon like Pawmot and Iron Hands, a Mega Evolution for Zeraora with the same typing – Electric/Fighting – would fit well with the recent trends.

Darkrai is a very popular Pokémon, so its Mega Evolution will likely be significant, even if its type doesn’t change. While often depicted without legs, Darkrai does have them, and these could be incorporated into its Mega Evolution design. Four Pokémon in *Legends: Z-A* gain a new type when they Mega Evolve, and we might see this happen with others. However, Darkrai will probably remain a pure Dark-type Pokémon. Here are the Pokémon that *do* get a new type combination:

  • Mega Clefable: Fairy/Flying – previously Fairy
  • Mega Meganium: Grass/Fairy – previously Grass
  • Mega Feraligatr: Water/Dragon – previously Water
  • Mega Barbaracle: Rock/Fighting – previously Rock/Water

Fans will need to be patient, as even players who get their hands on *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* early won’t be able to use Heatran, Darkrai, and Zeraora’s Mega Evolutions right away. However, these Mega Evolutions will be included in the game eventually, and they’re likely to be quite strong.
