Even with recent layoffs at Amazon, the new Tomb Raider project – a collaboration between Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics – is still moving forward, according to an internal announcement. While specific details about the next Tomb Raider game are still scarce, this is positive news considering Amazon’s recent company updates.
Okay, so this is pretty rough news for us New World players. Amazon announced a bunch of layoffs – over 14,000 people! – and unfortunately, Amazon Games took a big hit. They’re cutting staff at their Irvine and San Diego studios, and because of that, they’ve decided to stop making new content for New World: Aeternum. It’s not shutting down right away, thankfully. They’ve promised to keep the servers running at least through 2026, and they say they’ll give us six months’ notice before they pull the plug completely. Still, it’s a bummer to hear that the game’s future content is basically over.
Amazon Is Still Moving Forward With Tomb Raider
Amazon Games is changing its priorities to focus more on Amazon Luna and new game types, but it’s still committed to projects already in development. In a recent announcement, Amazon executive Steve Boom confirmed they’re continuing to work with Crystal Dynamics on the next Tomb Raider game, though details remain under wraps. Additionally, development will continue on an unannounced open-world driving game with Maverick Games, and Amazon’s Montreal studio will finish March of Giants. Moving forward, Amazon Games will primarily create party games for Luna, like Courtroom Chaos: Starring Snoop Dogg, giving players a taste of what’s to come.
Currently, the next Tomb Raider game is confirmed to be built using Unreal Engine 5 and will be a single-player experience. Lara Croft’s look in the new game will blend elements from her classic design – a light blue tank top, brown shorts, a backpack, and dual pistols – with her more recent Survivor trilogy appearance. This iconic design has already been used in collaborations with other games like Dead By Daylight and Magic: The Gathering.
The news about continued work on Tomb Raider came during a difficult period for Crystal Dynamics. The studio had recently laid off employees for a second time in 2025, after Microsoft cancelled their game Perfect Dark and also had layoffs. It remains to be seen how the changes at both Amazon and Crystal Dynamics will impact the future of the Tomb Raider series.
