Animal Crossing: New Horizons Getting Free Update And Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

Nintendo is bringing Animal Crossing: New Horizons to the new Nintendo Switch 2! They’ve announced a special edition of the game for the system, and also shared that all players will receive a free content update soon.

The Switch 2 Edition comes out on January 15, 2026, and will cost $64.99. If you already have the original game, you can get the upgrade for only $4.99.

Okay, so the new Switch 2 version of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is looking amazing. They’re boosting the graphics up to 4K when you play on your TV, which is huge! Plus, they’re letting you use a mouse with one of the new Joy-Cons, which I’m really excited about for decorating. They’ve even added a megaphone in the game so you can actually call your villagers – how cute is that? Online play is getting a big boost too; up to 12 of us can play together, and there’s this CameraPlay feature where you can see your friends while you’re all playing. It sounds like a ton of fun!

A Free Update Is Coming For Everyone

So, good news for Animal Crossing fans like me! Nintendo’s dropping a big free update on the same day as the paid DLC. It’s the first really major one since late 2021, and it sounds awesome. We’re getting a brand new resort, a way to reset your island (finally!), and even a special island for hanging out with friends. Nintendo’s got all the details if you want to check out everything new.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update Details:

  • Resort Hotel’s Grand Opening: A resort hotel is opening on the pier, and it’s run by Kapp’n’s family. To bring in guests from off the island, you’ll help out by decorating guest rooms and more. Plus, find new furniture and clothing at the souvenir shop and dress up mannequins with outfits that guests can wear.
  • Making Island Life More Convenient: Want a fresh start? Resetti is on hand with a convenient Reset Service to help tidy up your island. Additionally, you can now upgrade your home storage to hold up to 9,000 items, and store trees, shrubs and flowers there, too.
  • Slumber Island: Players with a Nintendo Switch Online membershipcan design and save up to three islands and play with friends online. Select the size and layout of the island, build and design it collaboratively, access your inventory and decorate, plus invite residents from your home island.
  • Collaborations: Collect Nintendo items like the Ultra Hand and Nintendo consoles in-game to add some classic flair to your island. Nintendo Switch Online members can play select classic Nintendo titles in-game when interacting with specific Nintendo console items, too! LEGO® items will also make their debut with this update. And use select The Legend of Zeldaand Splatoonseries amiibo8 to invite certain characters — and unlock various items inspired by those series.
