Fifteen years ago, EA planned a sequel to their action game, Dante’s Inferno, but the project was ultimately canceled. Though some gameplay footage surfaced occasionally, we’re now getting a full view of what ‘Dante’s Inferno 2: Purgatorio’ would have been.
Dante’s Inferno was initially hyped as a major action game, aiming to compete with popular titles like God of War and Devil May Cry. It ended up playing very similarly to God of War, and while it received generally positive reviews and sold well, plans for a sequel seemed to vanish. Now, after years of silence, there’s new talk about a possible Dante’s Inferno 2.
Dante’s Inferno 2 Would Have Been The Second Game In A Trilogy

The original Dante’s Inferno followed Dante, a Templar Knight, as he fought his way through terrifying monsters and challenging bosses across the Nine Circles of Hell. Its action-packed combat, dynamic camera work, puzzles, and epic boss battles were heavily inspired by the God of War series.
IGN recently published a detailed report revealing previously unknown information about the cancelled ‘Dante’s Inferno 2’. The report features screenshots, concept art, and story details for the sequel—and even outlines plans for a potential third game in the series.
The sequel to Dante’s Inferno was officially titled ‘Dante’s Inferno 2: Purgatorio’. According to IGN, the game had a detailed 240-page script written by Joshua Rubin, who also worked on Assassin’s Creed 2, covering all aspects of the game – from levels and boss fights to the overall story.
The next game would have moved away from taking inspiration from God of War and instead focused on creating its own unique style.
IGN’s report thoroughly describes each level of the game, focusing on how Dante progresses through Mount Purgatory and battles the Seven Sins. Interestingly, the developers at Visceral originally intended to add cooperative and multiplayer gameplay to a potential sequel, Dante’s Inferno 2.

A newly discovered document reveals the ending of the sequel was designed to lead directly into the story of “Dante’s Inferno 3: Paradiso.” IGN has a complete report with more information and images.
