Five Years Of PS5: What The Numbers Say

The PlayStation 5 has been out for five years, and here’s a look at what it’s achieved so far.

So, the PS6 isn’t happening for a while – reports say we’re looking at 2027! While we wait, it’s a good time to think about everything the PS5 has already achieved since it came out. It’s been a pretty amazing console so far!

From 2020 to 2025, Here’s How the PS5 Has Grown Over the Past Five Years

2020 – Share Screen and Accessibility

Launched in 2020, the console quickly became known for its fast loading times thanks to a high-speed SSD, its realistic 3D audio, and the innovative DualSense controller. Players especially loved the Share Screen feature, which lets you watch friends play live – it was used over 1.6 billion times, adding up to more than 900 million hours of viewing! The console also continues to improve accessibility, growing from 11 features at launch to a planned 20 by 2025.

2021 – Cross-Gen Share Play, M.22 SSD Expansion and More

The next year brought improvements to Share Play, letting PS5 and PS4 players with PlayStation Plus share games as if they were handing the controller to a friend. Players have used this feature over 700 million times since it launched. We also added support for expanding storage with M.2 SSDs, giving players more space for their games.

In 2021, PlayStation 5 owners shared an incredible 5.6 billion game captures through the PS App, and logged over a billion voice chat sessions. The DualSense wireless controller also became available in new colors – Midnight Black and Cosmic Red.

2022 – VRR, New PS Plus Tiers, and More Colors

The following year, the PlayStation 5 added variable refresh rate (VRR) technology, which made games look smoother and clearer by reducing visual distortions. Almost all players (96%) who have VRR-compatible monitors use this feature frequently. PlayStation Plus also underwent a major change, becoming a three-level subscription service with Essential, Extra, and Premium/Deluxe tiers. Players have collectively spent an impressive 14 billion hours playing games through the Game Catalog and Classic Catalog.

In 2022, Sony released three new DualSense controller colors inspired by the cosmos: Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple.

2023 – PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, and More

In 2023, accessories really stood out, most notably the launch of the PSVR2. This new virtual reality system offered immersive features like eye tracking, headset and controller vibrations, and responsive triggers with the PSVR2 Sense Controllers. PlayStation 5 also added Discord voice chat, which quickly became popular with over a billion sessions – people chatted for an average of 105 minutes each time!

Sony then unveiled the PlayStation Portal, a device created to greatly improve remote play, and it quickly became responsible for more than half of all PS5 remote play sessions. They also introduced new controllers: the DualSense Edge, a high-performance, customizable option, and the Access Controller, which was designed to make gaming more inclusive for everyone.

PlayStation Plus Premium members can now stream select PS5 games directly on their consoles, including titles from the Game Catalog, Game Trials, and games they’ve purchased digitally. Plus, a new range of audio products was launched featuring advanced planar magnetic drivers and PlayStation Link technology for a fast, high-quality wireless audio experience.

2024 – Community Game Help, Welcome Hub, and PS5 Pro

2024 was a pretty awesome year for PlayStation! We finally got Community Game Help, which is a lifesaver – basically, other players can now share short videos with helpful tips and tricks. It’s cool because it’s all from people who are already playing the games. They also revamped the home screen with the Welcome Hub – I can now personalize it with widgets and backgrounds, which is a nice touch. And of course, the PS5 Pro dropped, giving my games a nice boost, and they celebrated 30 years of PlayStation with a special collection – a great year overall!

2025 – Here’s Where Everything Adds Up

In 2025, the PlayStation 5 will celebrate its 5th anniversary, and it’s been incredibly successful. Over 84 million consoles have been sold worldwide – if you lined them all up, they’d stretch over 28,600 kilometers! Plus, more than 4,000 creators have released over 7,500 games for the PS5.

According to playtime data, the most popular multiplayer games on the PS5 are Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto V, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. For single-player experiences, players have spent the most time in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, God of War Ragnarök, and Hogwarts Legacy. PS5 players have collectively earned over 40 billion Trophies, including 110 million Platinum Trophies. Over the past five years, they’ve also played a massive 100 billion hours of games!

Here’s some quick gaming news: you can now buy some games once and play them on both PlayStation 5 and PC! Also, bringing Helldivers 2 to Xbox actually boosted sales for the PS5 and PC versions.
