Resident Evil Requiem will be a story-focused, single-player game, which wasn’t the original plan for the ninth main installment. The game’s producer recently shared details about how the team decided on this direction.
Resident Evil games haven’t traditionally been successful with multiplayer modes. Previous attempts like Umbrella Corps and Re:Verse were poorly received – Umbrella Corps is often called the worst in the series, and Re:Verse ultimately shut down due to low player numbers. While the new game, Resident Evil Requiem, won’t include multiplayer, the reasons behind that decision are quite interesting.
Resident Evil 9 Originally Had Multiplayer

We first heard that Resident Evil 9 was going to be an open-world game with multiplayer features. While that was true at one point, we now have more details about those plans and why the developers ultimately decided to make a single-player game instead.
Masato Kumazawa, the producer of Resident Evil Requiem, discussed the game’s initial design decisions in an interview with Press Start.
Initially, when the game allowed multiple players, the scary aspects weren’t very strong, but it was enjoyable. We realized, though, that a dedicated fan of the series might not appreciate that direction, so we switched back to a single-player experience. Because we liked how fun the multiplayer version was, we incorporated some of those elements into the final, single-player game to keep it engaging.
The game is now designed for a single-player experience, similar to Resident Evil 7 and Village. Players will need to rely on strategy to defeat the challenging bosses, and a new enemy type called the Stalker will keep them on their toes.
The series hasn’t historically done well with multiplayer, so it’s smart to focus on what players already love – and fear – from the core games, especially since the last two installments were so popular.
