One fortunate player of Pokemon GO got a unique opportunity: a special Gigantamax raid in Antarctica! They shared their experience and showed off the Grimmsnarl they successfully caught. Grimmsnarl, a Dark and Fairy-type Pokemon, was recently added to Pokemon GO and is currently available in Gigantamax Raids as part of the Wild Area 2025 event.
Niantic has been keeping players of Pokemon GO engaged with a series of events over the past few weeks. Starting with the annual Halloween celebration on October 21st, followed by Enchanted Hollow and the Wild Area 2025, the game has offered plenty to do. The recent weekend event marked the first opportunity for players to catch GMax Grimmsnarl, a Pokemon originally from the Galar region that’s now available in the mobile game. One player was especially lucky, managing to capture a rare version of this Dark and Fairy-type Pokemon.
Pokemon GO Player Invited to a GMax Raid in Antarctica
A Pokemon GO player named boyo1999 shared an incredible story on the game’s subreddit about a recent event. Their friend invited them to a special Gigantamax Raid battle against Grimmsnarl, but the location turned out to be the post office in Mawson, Antarctica! Despite being over 10,000 miles away, more than 40 players successfully completed the challenging 6-star raid, allowing boyo1999 to claim they’ve caught a Pokemon on every continent.
Even though the GMax Grimmsnarl I caught wasn’t perfect – its defense and health were just good enough to be considered a 3-star – the comments were overwhelmingly positive. People shared their own experiences, and many asked for the player’s Friend ID, hoping to team up for future Grimmsnarl raids in the Antarctica area.
Recently, locations in Antarctica have become increasingly popular spots for playing Pokemon GO. Although Antarctica doesn’t have many people, research stations are home to scientists and staff who enjoy the game. To support these players, Niantic has added PokeStops and Gyms to the continent. In 2024, they even added new PokeStops at the Davis Research Station after a request from the scientists stationed there.
Although most players won’t visit PokeStops in Antarctica, it’s not necessarily the rarest place to find one. In 2023, a player received a gift in Pokemon GO from someone in North Korea. The postcard with the gift mentioned “Buddha in Northkorea” and came from the city of Jonchon, and another gift came from a PokeStop in Hamhung. The player wasn’t sure if these gifts were genuine or if someone had used software to fake their location.
