As a huge Magic: The Gathering fan, I’m so excited for the Avatar release! Everything drops after prerelease week, starting November 14th and running through the 21st. There’s a lot coming out, which is awesome, no matter how you like to play. I know some of us really love Commander, and even though Wizards didn’t make dedicated Commander decks for this set, we’re still getting plenty of support! Of course, the main set is a big deal, but there’s also a smaller, tournament-legal set with Jumpstart boosters, and the Commander’s Bundle is just the perfect addition to it all.
Commander decks are popular because they’re a good way for beginners to start playing, and experienced players can get a playable deck without spending a lot of money—sometimes they even include valuable cards. Now that new official Commander decks are less common, the Avatar Commander’s Bundle seems like the next best option. Unfortunately, like many special releases, these bundles are quickly bought up by resellers who then mark up the price. Currently, the bundle is selling for around $185 to $200 on sites like TCGPlayer, and it’s no longer available from most official stores. Because of the inflated prices, it’s difficult to purchase the bundle without losing money.
The MSRP for the Avatar Commander’s Bundle was $109.99.
Magic: The Gathering’s Avatar Commander’s Bundle Value Breakdown
Throughout the history of Magic: The Gathering releases, some products have proven to be excellent values, while others haven’t. Recently, the Secret Lair drop for the MTG Encyclopedia was a great deal, containing cards worth far more than its $200 cost. On the other hand, the Avatar Commander’s Bundle, while not terrible, can be difficult to justify at its current price due to its specific contents:
- 15 Foil basic lands (with 5 full-art Appa lands)
- 15 non-foil lands (with 5 full-art Appa lands)
- 9 Play Boosters from the Avatar set
- 1 Collector Booster from the Avatar set
- 1 click-wheel life counter
- 1 storage box
- 5 promo cards (3 pre-determined, and 2 randomized)
The MSRP for each product inside the Avatar Commander’s Bundle is as follows:
- $6.99 for each Play Booster ($62.93 total)
- $37.99 for the Collector Booster
The lands included in this Magic: The Gathering bundle aren’t very valuable. The shiny, full-art versions will probably sell for under $2 each, and the regular ones are already worth less than $1. The life counter and storage box are good extras, but don’t add much to the overall value. The most valuable items in the bundle are the promo cards, which are:
- Guaranteed cards:
- Arcane Signet (around $0.40)
- Sol Ring (around $1.20)
- Swiftfoot Boots (around $1.20)
- Randomized cards (2 cards out of 10 per bundle):
- Enlightened Tutor (White, around $30)
- Flawless Maneuver (White, around $15)
- Mystical Tutor (Blue, around $13)
- Fierce Guardianship (Blue, around $42)
- Entomb (Black, around $14)
- Deadly Rollick (Black, around $17)
- Gamble (Red, around $11)
- Deflecting Swat (Red, around $61)
- Worldly Tutor (Green, around $19)
- Obscuring Haze (Green, around $6)
Why You May Not Break Even With Avatar’s Commander’s Bundle
On average, the randomized cards are worth $22.80 each or $45.60 for a pair. While this would be a great price compared to the $110 original price, you’re likely to get less value from the bundle. The actual value of the randomized cards can range from just $17 to $103, so it really depends on what you receive. This uncertainty also applies to Play and Collector Boosters, which are more likely to result in a loss or just break even than contain high-value cards.
Even if we don’t change the price of Magic: The Gathering Play Boosters and Collector Boosters, the numbers still aren’t great. Here’s how they look:
- $62.93 for Play Boosters
- $37.99 for the Collector Booster
- $10 for the foil lands and accessories
- $2.80 for the guaranteed promos (though the special versions may bring the total value to $10-15)
- $22.80 on average per randomized promo (though the special versions may be more expensive)
- Total value: $159.32
Is the Avatar Commander’s Bundle Worth It?
At its current price, the Commander’s Bundle is expensive for most players. Even if you get lucky with valuable randomized cards like Fierce Guardianship and Deflecting Swat, the total value—around $216—is only slightly better than the $185-200 price tag. This same issue happens with other limited-time offers, like the recent Magic: The Gathering Monster Hunter Secret Lair drop, which doesn’t offer a great value for the money.
Even though the Commander’s Bundle is now more expensive, people might still buy it just for the fun of opening packs and collecting the special cards inside. But if you were hoping for a great value, it was only a good deal at its original price. There’s a lot of excitement around cards like Wan Shi Tong, Avatar Aang, and Firebending Student, and these could potentially be included in the bundle – if we’re lucky! With a little luck, you might even find key cards for a strong Commander deck, such as Enlightened Tutor, Fierce Guardianship, and Deflecting Swat.
