One-Punch Man Season 3 Keeps Getting Worse As It Breaks an Embarrassing New Record

The latest season of One-Punch Man isn’t resonating with fans. Just over a month after its release, season 3 of the anime is receiving significant criticism from viewers and online commentators.

Fans are extremely unhappy with the animation and quality of the current season, and episode 6, “Motley Heroes,” has become the lowest-rated anime episode ever on IMDb. It’s now scored even lower than a previous record-holder – episode 11 of The Promised Neverland‘s second season – despite starting with a relatively higher rating.

One-Punch Man Season 3 is Breaking Records, Just Not The Ones You’d Hope It Would

The latest episode of the show initially received a 3.4 rating, which was similar to other episodes in season 3. However, the score quickly dropped, falling to 2.0 and then 1.6 within a few days. Previously, episode 11 of The Promised Neverland season 2 held the record for the lowest-rated anime episode with a 2.9. Currently, this new episode, titled “Motley Heroes,” has a rating of 1.4 based on approximately 19,000 reviews.

It’s clear fans are very disappointed with the current season of the series. Before episode 6 was released, season 3 had an average IMDb rating of just 3.9 – a significant drop from season 1’s 8.7 and season 2’s 8.1. While season 2 received some criticism for its speed and animation, it didn’t face the same strong negative reaction as the current season. Fans are making their dissatisfaction known in every way possible, indicating serious problems with the latest installment.

The newest episode of “Counterstrike” isn’t performing well, currently holding a 2.5 rating from about 5,100 reviews. If this continues, a later episode might even receive a lower score than episode 6. However, episode 6 had almost three times the usual number of ratings, suggesting many people intentionally gave it a low score as part of a negative reaction to the new season. While future episodes likely won’t fall below a 2.0 rating, it seems the rest of the season will continue to receive poor reviews.

Season 3 Has Been Mired in Controversy From the Start

Season 3 faced problems from the start. A teaser released in September upset many fans, and the director, Shinpei Nagai, admitted it likely wouldn’t be as good as the first season, which worried people even more. Shortly after, Nagai left social media because of harassment. The staff working on the new season have received a lot of criticism, and while feedback is normal, some fans have gone too far with their negativity.

The One-Punch Man anime seems to be facing serious problems. While Bandai Namco might still believe in its potential, the recent quality and how fans are responding suggest a difficult future for the series. It’s uncertain if we’ll ever see a fourth season, and even if we do, it could be a very long wait. There was already a four-year gap between the first and second seasons, and six years between the second and third. Fans may have to wait even longer – or possibly never get another season at all.

The first season of One-Punch Man premiered in fall 2016 and was animated by Madhouse, with Shingo Natsume (known for Sonny Boy and The Tatami Galaxy) as director. It received a lot of praise for its animation and how faithfully it followed the original manga. When J.C. Staff took over for the second season in spring 2019, directed by Chikara Sakurai (Little Busters!, Waiting in the Summer), some fans felt the quality declined. While season 2 wasn’t as popular as the first, it hasn’t faced nearly as much criticism as the currently airing third season.

I’ve been seeing a lot of concern from fans about the new season, specifically questioning whether director Shinpei Nagai is the right fit, even though he’s directed episodes of shows like Psycho-Pass, Gangsta., and Samurai Flamenco. It seems like the animators are also getting a lot of heat online, and honestly, every conversation I see about the new season feels really tense and unpredictable.

Fans are understandably disappointed with the current state of One-Punch Man, and it’s clear there are production issues behind the scenes. Season 3 is likely to be remembered as a particularly divisive anime, not just this fall, but for years to come. Hopefully, everyone involved can move forward and create something even better in the future.
