MTG’s Monster Hunter collab delayed over fan backlash

Following strong criticism from players, Wizards of the Coast is reworking the Magic: The Gathering and Monster Hunter collaboration, known as Secret Lair. The set will be redesigned and won’t be released until 2026.

The partnership was announced on November 20, 2025, but fans of both Magic: The Gathering and Monster Hunter were quickly disappointed. They criticized the unusual monster selections, the lack of the familiar equipment upgrade system, and even spotted a spelling mistake in the name of Kokoto, a well-known village in the Monster Hunter series.

Players noticed some strange choices in the game, like Gore Magala being categorized as a demon and Brachydios acting like a magic user – things that didn’t fit with the original Monster Hunter games. Wizards of the Coast has listened to this feedback and announced they’ll be making changes to more accurately represent the Capcom series.

Monster Hunter x Secret Lair is being reworked

On November 26th, Wizards responded to the feedback they’d received with a statement published on the official Magic: The Gathering website.

We want to be upfront: last week’s Secret Lair x Monster Hunter collection didn’t meet our goals, and we understand you were disappointed. We’re committed to improving and doing better in the future.

The developers admitted they didn’t quite get everything right with the game, specifically mentioning issues with how players choose cards and how well the game captures the feel of the Monster Hunter universe. They also acknowledged that the current version doesn’t meet the quality players expect.

We’re disappointed with how the Secret Lair x Monster Hunter collection turned out, and we understand your concerns. We’re going back to revise it and will share more details soon.

Capcom supports the decision to postpone the release, and is willing to try again with a new version. Wizards of the Coast will completely rework the project, and now plans to launch it sometime in 2026.

Magic: The Gathering often features collaborations with other games, and fans of Monster Hunter will be pleased with the latest additions. The game’s lead designer, Gavin Verhey, is also looking forward to incorporating the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 set.
